New York Mets relief pitcher Yohan Ramírez’s three-game suspension for throwing at Rhys Hoskins has been reduced to two games after an appeal, per MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo.
Ramírez was ejected from Saturday’s contest against the Milwaukee Brewers after throwing a 94 mph fastball behind Hoskins, earning him a three-game suspension.
DiComo noted that Ramírez likely wouldn’t have appeared on Monday or Tuesday regardless because he threw three innings on Sunday. The Mets begin a three-game series with the Detroit Tigers on Monday after losing all three games to the Brewers over the weekend.
Ramírez’s pitch at Hoskins came after tempers flared in Friday’s matchup. Looking to break up a double play, Hoskins executed an aggressive slide into Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil. The play led to the benches clearing and high tensions the rest of the weekend.
On Saturday, Hoskins had a two-run single and his first home run of the season before Ramírez threw behind him. Hoskins took exception to the pitch, claiming “big leaguers don’t miss by eight feet,” despite Mets manager Carlos Mendoza saying it wasn’t intentional.
Intentional or not, Ramírez was dealt a suspension that he ultimately was able to get down to two games rather than three. In two appearances this season—including Saturday’s when he threw just seven pitches—Ramírez has notched three strikeouts and two walks while allowing two earned runs in 3.1 innings pitched this season.
Once his suspension ends, Ramírez will look to contribute as the Mets get into the routine of the new season.
