New York Giants: 6 players whose jobs are in jeopardy in 2024
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The New York Giants should have plenty of competition throughout the roster when training camp arrives.

Though not many starting roles are up for grabs when the Giants return to the Quest Diagnostics Training Center for training camp at the end of July, there will be some shuffling taking place within the depth chart.

There are a handful of players who are in danger of either losing their roles within the depth chart or a roster spot entirely.

Before training camp arrives, here’s a look at six Giants’ players whose jobs are in jeopardy in 2024:

Giants players whose jobs are in jeopardy in 2024

RT Evan Neal

Of course, Neal is at the top of this list. He’s the biggest projected starter who is in jeopardy of losing his job. Whether it’s due to the constant injuries he’s dealt with since being drafted No. 7 overall or just a poor performance in general, it will be interesting to see what type of leash Neal has going into his fourth season.

The Giants are making the decision to keep Neal at right tackle while putting veteran Jermaine Eluemunor at left guard. It could work if Neal finally shows improvements or the Giants may need to put the veteran at right tackle—the spot he’s proven to be best at during his career.

RB Eric Gray

With Devin Singletary coming over from the Houston Texans in free agency, it seemed Gray might be in line to earn the backup role behind him. However, the Giants then made the decision to draft Purdue running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. in the fifth round.

By the end of the spring workouts, Tracy was seeing more work with the first-team offense than Gray. If this trend continues, the rookie back will be in line to take Gray’s role as the change-of-pace back, putting the latter’s future with the Giants up in the air.

WR Isaiah Hodgins

Once the Giants selected Malik Nabers with the No. 6 overall pick in the draft, everyone in the wide receiver room was bumped down a peg on the depth chart. For Hodgins, he may be the odd-man out when it comes to seeing significant snaps on offense.

Entering training camp, Hodgins figures to be behind Nabers, Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt on the depth chart. He’s also competing with Allen Robinson, Isaiah McKenzie and Gunner Olszewski for the final one or two spots on the depth chart.

CB Tre Hawkins III

Hawkins struggled during his rookie season while making three starts and playing 30.8% of the defensive snaps, the fourth most among Giants cornerbacks in 2023. The former sixth-round pick figures to be in the competition for one of the depth spots, but he’ll need to show he’s made strides from his rookie season.

Regardless of his defensive role, Hawkins played fewer special teams snaps in 2023 than Nick McCloud and Darnay Holmes. Those snaps are crucial for depth cornerbacks. While it seems his roster spot is somewhat safe, his role as a rotational defensive back could be diminished if McCloud proves to be a better option.

CB Aaron Robinson

The former third-round pick finds himself on the roster bubble after the Giants used a third-round pick on Andru Phillips, who is expected to take over as the starting nickel defender. Robinson hasn’t played since tearing his ACL during the 2022 season.

With Darnay Holmes also competing for the final spot in the cornerback room, Robinson’s roster spot is certainly in question.

DT Jordan Phillips

The Giants signed Phillips this offseason, but there wasn’t much to go off of in terms of his role this spring due to his recovery from wrist surgery. Phillips is a 10-year veteran with vast experience so he should be safe in terms of a roster spot.

But if defensive tackles like Ryder Anderson and DJ Davidson continue to climb the depth chart, Phillips could be headed for ever more of a rotational role than expected.
