Southgate has confirmed his departure as England boss following defeat in the Euro 2024 final earlier this month.

The 53-year-old managed England to four major tournaments, reaching the semi final of the World Cup in 2018, just two years after England’s 2-1 defeat to Iceland in Euro 2016 under Roy Hodgson, potentially the worst defeat for the side in the modern era.

The Three Lions have reached back-to-back Euros finals, either side of a quarter-final defeat to defending champions France in the 2022 World Cup, but many fans believe this crop of England players should be achieving more than they are.

Southgate had come under considerable pressure in recent times as England boss, particularly after winning only one of three group games at Euro 2024 and coming within a whisker of an embarrassing Round of 16 exit to Slovakia before Jude Bellingham’s 95th bicycle kick took the tie to extra time.

“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all,” Southgate wrote in a statement today.

“But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.”

Eddie Howe is the new favourite to take the job in Wembley hot seat, having had his odds halved from 5/1 to 5/2 in the last week, overtaking ex-Chelsea manager Graham Potter as the bookies’ top pick.

The Englishman has impressed whilst in charge of the Magpies in recent years, leading them to their highest Premier League finish in 20 years in 2023 and taking them to the group stage of the Champions League in his first full season in charge at Tyneside.

The 46-year-old first made his name in the Premier League by leading Bournemouth to top flight for the first time in the club’s history and keeping them in the Premier League even for a further five seasons, following three promotions in six years with the Cherries.

Current England U21 manager Lee Carsley has the next shortest odds to take over as England boss at 3/1, with the former Ireland international very much in the FA’s good books after winning the U21 Euros with England in the summer of 2023 for the first time in 39 years.

The 50-year-old former Everton midfielder was linked with the vacant Republic of Ireland manager position earlier this year, but after Southgate was promoted from the U21s when he was given the England job, the FA could choose to hire internally once again.

Graham Potter was the early favourite to take the job but has since seen his odds drift from 2/1 to 3/1.

The former Chelsea and Brighton manager has been out of a job since being sacked at Stamford Bridge in April last year less than seven months after being given the job following a successful three-year stint on the south coast with the Seagulls.

The 49-year-old guided Brighton to their first ever top half finish in top flight history in 2022, before Chelsea bought him out of his contract early the following season where he struggled to change the fortunes of a transitioning side, though many feel he wasn’t given enough time.

Three managers are priced at 8/1 in joint fourth-place to be in the running for England’s 2026 World Cup campaign, with former Three Lions star and ex-Chelsea and Everton boss Frank Lampard in the mix, alongside the Liverpool and Chelsea managers of last season, Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino, who are now both out of a job.
