Over at NFL.com draft analyst Chad Reuter took on a whale this week by going through a seven-round mock draft with all 32 teams and every single player currently in the league being made available to pick. It was very interesting to see how many Houston Texans players got picked and where compared to other contenders around the league.
Naturally, the draft got started with a run on quarterbacks, with the top pick being Patrick Mahomes, followed by Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert and Dak Prescott. With the next pick the Tennesssee Titans took C.J. Stroud, marking the first Texan to get drafted.
Here are the rest of them, where they got picked and which team they’d be going to in this scenario.
1. QB C.J. Stroud: Round 1 – No. 7 overall (Titans)
2. LT Laremy Tunsil: Round 2 – No. 63 overall (Commanders)
3. DE Danielle Hunter: Round 3 – No. 65 overall (Panthers)
4. DE Will Anderson Jr.: Round 3 – No. 76 overall (Broncos)
5. CB Derek Stingley Jr.: Round 4 – No. 100 overall (Lions)
6. WR Nico Collins: Round 4 – No. 116 overall (Raiders)
7. DL Denico Autry: Round 6 – No. 169 overall (Cowboys)
8. RB Joe Mixon: Round 6 – No. 180 overall (Raiders)
9. WR Tank Dell: Round 7 – No. 213 overall (Dolphins)
It’s interesting that Collins and Dell both made the cut but Stefon Diggs did not get drafted by anyone, when he should be considered at the top of Houston’s WR depth chart. We’ll consider that an oversight, which is inevitable in any project this big. So, it should really be 10 Texans picked.
As for the Texans themselves, this is the group of players they came away with in Reuter’s seven-round mock:
1. DE Maxx Crosby: Round 1 (No. 27 overall)
2. WR Amon-Ra St. Brown: Round 2 (No. 38 overall)
3. S Tyrann Mathieu: Round 3 (No. 91 overall)
4. QB Will Levis: Round 4 (No. 102 overall)
5. OT JC Latham: Round 5 (No. 155 overall)
6. DL Byron Murphy II: Round 6 (No. 166 overall)
7. WR Mike Williams: Round 7 (No. 219 overall)
This doesn’t feel like much of an even trade as far as talent goes, especially the significant step backwards at QB going from Stroud to Levis. However, that again speaks to the better-than-average talent that Houston has going right now. As long as Stroud stays healthy and the supporting cast remains strong they have a championship window open.
