NFL free agency tracker 2024: Live updates on news, rumors, signings and trades

NFL free agency is here again, and the league’s 32 teams will likely be aggressive with their spending in 2024.

The NFL’s salary cap was initially expected to be around $240 million to $245 million in 2024. Instead, the league set it at $255.4 million, giving each team at least $10 million more spending power than expected.

That has already proven meaningful for NFL players and pending free agents. Stars like Mike Evans, Chris Jones, and Justin Madubuike have re-signed with their clubs on high-end deals, while other players like Dalton Schultz, Hunter Henry, and Ezra Cleveland have also cashed in on extensions.

Now, NFL teams will be even more enterprising in their usage of cap space as they pursue free agents from other clubs. That’s especially true with players like Kirk Cousins, Saquon Barkley, Christian Wilkins, and Russell Wilson available.

8:29 a.m. — Mitch Morse has a new home. The former Bills center inked a two-year, $10.5 million deal with $7 million guaranteed to join the Jaguars, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. The Jaguars started 2022 third-round pick Luke Fortner at center last season so Morse may be competition or veteran depth behind the soon-to-be 26-year-old.

8:23 a.m. — It seems like Kirk Cousins is going to hit free agency barring a last-minute agreement with the Vikings. Minnesota is among the teams interested in signing him with the Falcons serving as major competition, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

“It does seem like the Minnesota Vikings are still working, still trying to see if there’s somehow, some way they can get Kirk Cousins to stay,” Rapoport said. “He’s always going to maximize, always going to take the biggest deal, but the clock is ticking for the Vikings. If it’s not Cousins, they’re going to have to pivot to Plan B.”

8:09 a.m. — The Colts gave linebacker Zaire Franklin a three-year extension worth $31.26 million hours before free agency, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Franklin still had a year left on the three-year, $10 million deal he signed with the Colts in 2022 but earned a raise after recording a career-high 179 tackles and six pass defenses in 2023.

11:41 p.m. — Wilson will be signing with the Steelers, taking one of the top quarterback names off the free agent market early. The veteran quarterback announced the move on X (formerly Twitter) as reports began to come out about his decision.

10:33 p.m. — The defensive tackle market will have one major name added to it. The 49ers reportedly could not get Arik Armstead to take a pay cut, and instead opted to release him.

Source: The 49ers approached Arik Armstead about accepting a significant pay cut from his scheduled salary of $17.41 million. He declined, so the 49ers are set to release him and he will become a free agent.

9:10 p.m. — Kendrick Bourne is coming back to the Patriots. He has reportedly signed a three-year, $33 million contract with New England, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

7:24 p.m. — Cousins will not be signing a contract before free agency opens. He will instead be hitting free agency and testing the open market, with his agent reportedly informing the Vikings of his decision Sunday night, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Cousins has reportedly not ruled out re-signing with Minnesota.

Mayfield led the Buccaneers to the NFC divisional round in their first year without Tom Brady and threw for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while playing on a one-year deal.

4:23 p.m. — The Chargers are listening to trade offers on their top two receivers, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, and top pass rushers Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack, per Albert Breer of The MMQB. The Chargers have negative $21 million in cap space as of Breer’s report.

The Chargers have had exploratory trade talks on OLBs Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack (as @DMRussini said), and WRs Mike Williams and Keenan Allen. Allen appears to be least likely to be moved, but they’re listening on all of them.

It all, of course, relates to their cap situation.

3:24 p.m. — The Bears are signing former Titans and Eagles safety Kevin Byard to a two-year, $15 million deal, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Byard had a career-high 122 tackles in 2023 and will be asked to replace Eddie Jackson, who was a cap casualty in Chicago during the offseason.

12:35 p.m. — Fletcher Cox is retiring from the NFL after 12 seasons. The Eagles lost Jason Kelce to retirement earlier in the offseason, so they now have gaps to fill on both sides of the trenches.

11:07 a.m. — The Patriots traded quarterback Mac Jones to the Jaguars for a 2024 sixth-round pick. Jones gets a fresh start after a couple of rocky seasons in New England. He was benched in favor of Bailey Zappe in 2023 after completing 64.9 percent of his passes for 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

Trade: Patriots are finalizing a deal to send QB Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars, sources tell ESPN. The trade cannot be processed until the new league year begins Wednesday and he passes a physical. The two sides were discussing a 6th-round pick, per sources.

10:41 p.m. — Chris Jones agreed to an extension with the Chiefs that will keep him in Kansas City for five seasons.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 10, 2024

The full details of the deal weren’t revealed, but Jones is expected to get the highest-ever contract for a defensive tackle and $95 million in guarantees.

9:32 p.m. — The Broncos cut Justin Simmons earlier in the offseason, but they kept one of their other top safeties, PJ Locke, on a two-year deal worth up to $7 million, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

12:30 p.m. —  The Browns have made another receiver trade. They acquired Jerry Jeudy from the Broncos for fifth- and sixth-round picks in the 2024 NFL Draft. Cleveland acquired both Amari Cooper and Elijah Moore via trade and will now hope that Jeudy, a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, will be invigorated by a change of scenery.

The two picks are 2024 5th- and 6th-round picks, per source. https://t.co/NB2QZFOyRk

11:35 a.m. — Brandon Graham is returning to the Eagles for a 15th season. The 2010 first-round pick out of Michigan has 73 sacks in 195 career games and should continue as a good rotational edge player despite entering his age-36 season.

NFL free agency rumors, trade rumors

Vikings, Falcons among the favorites to land Kirk Cousins

Date: March 10

Source: ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano

The Vikings and Falcons appear to be the top teams in the running for Kirk Cousins. Fowler reports that the Falcons are a “major threat” to sign Cousins but a Vikings source told the ESPN reporter, “We’re not out of it.”

Cousins’ decision figures to come early in NFL free agency and could influence other quarterback signings, so fans should know expeditiously whether the Vikings will be running it back for another season or if the Falcons will be gearing up for an NFC South title run.

Bears waiting on Kirk Cousins before trading Justin Fields

Date: March 10

Source: ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano

The Bears are likely to select Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick, but they “did not find the market they were hoping to find for Fields” in potential trades. That may force them to wait and see where some of the top quarterback targets — like Cousins — land before a true trade partner emerges.

Eagles listening to trade calls on EDGE Josh Sweat

Date: March 9

Source: NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero

The Eagles are listening to trade calls on edge rusher Josh Sweat, who has 35 career sacks — including 25 in his three seasons as a full-time starter. The Eagles saw Fletcher Cox retire and are permitting Haason Reddick to seek a trade, so Philadelphia’s defensive line rotation could look a lot different in 2024 than it did in ’23 (even with Brandon Graham returning for a 15th season).
