The Kansas City Chiefs could be interested in adding another receiving option in free agency.
Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Chiefs are among several teams eyeing Chicago Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney, who entered free agency this week.
Mooney, 26, had 414 receiving yards and a touchdown on 31 receptions this season. While playing under Bears former head coach and current Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, Mooney had 1,055 receiving yards in 2021. If the Chiefs sign Mooney, it would reunite him with Nagy, whom he had the most success with so far in his four-year career.
Mooney is coming off a four-year, $3.56 million rookie deal and is an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career. Mooney declined a three-year extension with the Bears ahead of the 2023 season.
While Mooney hasn’t found much success over the last two seasons—failing to record more than 500 receiving yards in 2022 and 2023—he has shown flashes and could be a productive option, especially if Patrick Mahomes is his quarterback.
The Chiefs found plenty of success in 2023, winning a second straight Super Bowl, but the wide receiver group was one of the biggest concerns during the regular season. Dropped passes and miscues from the receiver group were commonplace all season and led many to believe Kansas City didn’t have what was needed to win another Super Bowl.
Ultimately, Mahomes and the Chiefs managed the receiver woes, but adding a talented receiver to the mix could be what helps the Chiefs win an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl.
