Following another rough season with the New York Jets, Zach Wilson is looking for the opportunity to get a fresh start in 2024.
Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Wilson has started the process of “evaluating” trade options by looking at teams that might be potential fits, and the Jets have agreed to gauge his market.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported on Tuesday the Jets are expected to trade Wilson “in the coming weeks” as they seek to find an upgrade to backup Aaron Rodgers.
If a trade does happen, Cimini noted the consensus from people around the league is the Jets would be able to get a sixth- or seventh-round draft pick back for Wilson.
It’s in the best interest of both Wilson and the Jets to move on this offseason. He was expected to have a “reset” season as a backup in 2023 with the arrival of Aaron Rodgers.
When Rodgers’ season ended on the Jets’ first offensive possession of their Week 1 game against the Buffalo Bills, Wilson was thrust back into action. He did set a career-high with a 60.1 completion percentage and finished with more touchdowns (eight) than interceptions (seven) for the first time.
But the offense struggled throughout the season with Wilson as the primary starting quarterback. They ranked 29th in points (15.8) and 31st in yards per game (268.6) this season.
Wilson was benched after a 32-6 loss to the Bills on Nov. 19. Tim Boyle started the next two games, but he was replaced by Trevor Siemian in the second half of a Week 13 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
When the Jets were trying to figure out who their starter was going to be after that game, The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt, Dianna Russini and Jeff Howe reported Wilson was “hesitant” to take the role as the team was leaning toward him.
Wilson denied having any reluctance about wanting to start again. He ultimately started the next two games before suffering an injury in the Black Friday game against the Miami Dolphins that ended his season.
In three seasons since being selected with the No. 3 overall pick, Wilson has thrown for 6,293 yards, 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in 34 games. He has a 12-21 record in 33 starts.
Next season will be the final guaranteed year of Wilson’s rookie contract. He will earn a $1.06 million base salary.
