Wide receiver Xavier Worthy’s wishes came true when the Kansas City Chiefs traded up to select him with pick No. 28 of the 2024 NFL Draft, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“This was exactly, too, where Xavier Worthy wanted to go,” Schefter said Friday on ESPN’s NFL Live. “He even suggested to his agent at one point in time, ‘Can we tell all 31 teams that the one place I do want to go is Kansas City, so I can play with Patrick Mahomes?’
“It doesn’t work like that, but in the end, it worked out that.”

Worthy set an NFL Combine record by running a 4.21-second 40-yard dash in March.
The former Texas wideout will now have the opportunity to play alongside Travis Kelce and Marquise Brown as a top target for Mahomes this fall.
The Chiefs dealt the No. 32 selection, and traded down in two later rounds, in order to slide four spots up the board and draft Worthy.
“Everybody’s dream is to play with Patrick Mahomes, probably one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time,” Worthy said after the Chiefs’ selection, per The Athletic’s Nate Taylor. “I’ve been calling it, been saying it since the beginning of (last season): I’m going to the Chiefs. Everybody thought the NFL was never going to let the Chiefs get to me, but I’m here. I’m excited just to be able to play with Pat.”
Worthy wasn’t the only one who approved of the Chiefs’ first round decision. Mahomes and Brown also seemed happy with the pick:

Worthy made 75 catches for 1,104 receiving yards and five touchdowns during his senior season with Texas.
Schefter said the trade up was in part facilitated by the “close” friendship between Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and Bills coach Sean McDermott.
Reid also described himself as “close” with Texas coach Steve Sarkisian during post-draft interviews, and said praise from Worthy’s college helped influence the decision to move up for the speedy wideout, per PJ Green of Kansas City’s Fox 4.
The last time Kansas City made a deal with the Bills to trade up in the 2017 draft, the Chiefs ended up with the No. 10 pick and the opportunity to draft Mahomes. The team will hope the Worthy pick will go down in history as a similarly impactful move.
