Connor McDavid doesn’t have anything to prove when it comes to how good he is at the game of hockey. However, it never hurts to remind the people just how talented the Oilers star is.
On a night all about showcasing the skills, it was no surprise to see the best player on the planet dominate in front of a packed Toronto crowd. McDavid took home the top honors at the NHL All-Star Skills competition, finishing first in the 12-man challenge and winning a $1 million prize in the process.
The stars did not disappoint Friday night. In a battle that came down to other elite skaters such as Cale Makar, Auston Matthews and William Nylander, McDavid managed to beat out his other competitors at the last second of the 2024 event.

The Oilers superstar won three of the first six challenges in Round 1, easily punching his ticket to Round 2. McDavid stumbled a bit during the One-on-One event in the second round, however, his strong showing to start was enough to get him in the final.
It’s fitting that the last event — the Obstacle Course — was McDavid’s own inspiration. The Edmonton captain had a major part in designing the skills night, and the final challenge had his fingerprints all over it. So it was not a surprise to see McDavid dominate the final, beating Makar’s time by almost three seconds to be crowned the champion.
The 2024 edition of the Skills competition differed from year’s past. Instead of there being a number of separate challenges throughout the night, the NHL elected for a 12-man competition, with players earning points in each round.
McDavid was one of those consulted on the format, and he viewed the changes as positive.

“I thought it was a fun event,” McDavid said after the contest. “I hope the fans had fun, we put on a good show. I thought it was fun.
“Everybody wanted to go back to the basics and show off the skills that we use on a nightly basis. I thought you saw some good speed, some good passing, some good shooting.”

NHL All-Star Skills competition live updates, highlights from every 2024 contest
In this event, the 12 participants will partake in four of the first six events. The amount of participants per event will vary.
For each challenge, players are competing for points based off their ranking. For example, first place earns five points, second get four, third receives three, fourth gets two and fifth receives.
After the first six events in Round 1, top eight skaters advance to Round 2, which is the one-on-one breakaway challenge. Once again, points are based off where each player finishes in the challenge.
Finally, the top six point scorers after Round 2 advance to the third and final round — the Obstacle Course. In this event, points are worth double. Whoever has the most combined points at the end wins the skills competition and the $1 million prize.

McDavid does it. He wins his fourth challenge of the evening, dominating the Obstacle Course to secure the $1 million prize. He’s the greatest player on Earth, and he showcased exactly why in Toronto tonight.

One-on-One — William Nylander
William Nylander shined in front of the home crowd, putting nine points on the board against Cam Talbot to win the One-on-One Challenge.
There were plenty of highlights in the event, including a New York vs. New York battle between Mat Barzal and Igor Shesterkin, and Alexandar Georgiev securing the $100,000 prize for the goalies. He turned aside the most shots against in the event, stoning Connor McDavid on multiple attempts.
Elias Pettersson and Nathan MacKinnon failed to move out of Round 2, narrowing the field to six.

In the words of Seth Rogan’s character from “Superbad” — “He’s a freak, he’s the fastest kid alive.” McDavid was the favorite to win Fastest Skater coming in, and he proved why in the first event, beating out Mat Barzal for the best time.

One Timers — Nathan MacKinnon
Nathan MacKinnon was the second player to go in the One Timers event, but his 23 points were enough to hold on for the win. It looked like David Pastrnak may have eked out a win over the Avs star, however, he had his points taken back, leaving MacKinnon as the winner.

Elias Petterson continues his sensational 2023-24 campaign, showcasing his superb passing skills to finish first in the Passing Challenge. The Canucks star barely edged out Makar for the top spot, getting his final pass just in time to earn three points.

Hardest Shot — Cale Makar
After missing out on first place in the Passing Challenge, Makar responded by taking the Hardest Shot event. His first attempt at 102.56 mph was just enough to beat J.T/ Miller’s try of 102.34 mph.

Who but McDavid? The wizard himself would not be beat in the Stick Handling contest, finishing the event in 25.755 seconds to claim his second challenge of the night. The Oilers star was a full second ahead of Barzal, who finished in second.
