“No. 1 Teacher”: Rookie Rashee Rice Credits Mentor Patrick Mahomes for Record-Breaking NFL Career Start

Rashee Rice has become irreplaceable for Patrick Mahomes. While many Kansas City Chiefs receivers were unable to play to their potential, Rice was the one who carried the Chiefs for a long time. The Chiefs rookie receiver has a lot to thank Patrick Mahomes for. Rice is the Chiefs’ leading receiver by a considerable margin and holds the record for the most significant number of receptions (79) in the franchise. This might not have been possible without Mahomes.

Rice appeared in the presser before the conference title game against the Baltimore Ravens and spoke at length about his relationship with Mahomes. The quarterback is apparently the best mentor Rice could have, coming fresh out of SMU. He has just a year in the league and is already breaking franchise records.

The Chiefs’ rookie wide receiver was asked about his relationship with Patrick Mahomes and how he’s helped Rice become a better athlete. Rice started by mentioning how he and the quarterback work on different but new routes and how his communication with the quarterback is improving by the day. Mahomes has also helped Rice change “personnel and formations,” depending on how sticky the situation is.

“When it comes to, you know, running certain routes against zone and man defense is just like if I without me even have to go to Pat he’d let me know what he’s looking for so I can know how to run my route,” said Rice. He added that Mahomes is a “No. 1 teacher” and mentioned that he goes back to the “primary source” if he needs advice.

Rashee Rice completed 79 of 102 times he was targeted, and this was just the regular season. He added 12 more in the postseason games. Comparing him to someone like the Ravens rookie WR Zay Flowers, who has completed 77 of his 108 targets, it seems like Rice is one of the leading rookies who might make his way to the Super Bowl.

This is the kind of impact Patrick Mahomes has had on Rashee Rice. In the wild-card game against the Miami Dolphins, Rice had 177 receiving yards and also scored an 11-yard touchdown after Mahomes passed him the ball. He got injured and had a slow comeback, but we can expect a healed Rashee Rice in the Ravens game.
