Summer McIntosh blew away the field in the women’s 400-meter individual medley to win her first-ever Olympic gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
The 17-year-old Canadian phenom sped past the field before the halfway point of the event that showcases all four swimming disciplines (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly).
American Katie Grimes was the only swimmer who stayed remotely close to McIntosh over 400 meters.
Grimes finished in second to lead the American charge behind McIntosh. Grimes took the silver and Emma Weyant won bronze.

McIntosh entered Monday’s final as the clear favorite to take home gold and she delivered on that status.
She touched the wall well before the American duo of Katie Grimes and Emma Weyant, the other two medalists, completed the event.
McIntosh became the first Canadian woman to ever win gold in the 400 IM. Monday’s win may be the start of her Olympic dominance in the event for years to come.
The only thing McIntosh did not achieve inside Paris La Defense Arena was the world or Olympic record. She was three seconds off the world record she set in May 2024.
No world records have been broken yet inside the pool at the Summer Olympics.
McIntosh’s win was the second goal for Canada at the Paris Olympics. The Canadians have two total medals in the pool.
Grimes and Weyant added to the American medal haul inside the pool. They picked up the eighth and ninth American podium finishes.
Grimes earned her first-ever Olympic medal, while Weyant earned her second Olympic medal. Weyant previously earned silver in the 400 IM at the Tokyo Olympics.
