Patrick Mahomes remembers.
The Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback has played in three Super Bowls, won two big games, and already passed for more than 25,000 yards in the NFL.

But while most of the football world has moved on from an interception that Mahomes threw in 2016, the NFL’s reigning MVP hasn’t forgotten who picked him off and what the circumstances were.
“I think Reed got me in college for like a pick-six,” Mahomes said this week.
That’s D.J. Reed, now a cornerback for the New York Jets who the Chiefs play on Sunday.
And the Kansas City leader still recalls a specific play from seven years ago.
It was Texas Tech 7, Kansas State 7 late in the first quarter on Oct. 29, 2016 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Mahomes waited in a shotgun formation and called out a play.
Reed stood on the left side of the field about six yards off the line of scrimmage.
The future Jet must have seen something specific before the snap, because Reed broke for the ball as soon as Mahomes threw it.

It was an easy interception and a smooth pick-six for Reed, who only has five interceptions in 75 pro games.
“I know he’s good at reading and recognizing routes,” Mahomes said.
Reed got to Mahomes but Tech won the day, erasing a 17-10 fourth-quarter deficit to push the game into overtime and win it 27-24 in double OT.
Mahomes was 24-of-39 passing for 206 yards, two touchdowns and one pick against the Horned Frogs.

The week prior, he threw for an absurd 734 yards against Baker Mayfield’s Oklahoma Sooners.
Reed’s INT still stands out to Mahomes but other big numbers in 2016 were a hint of what was to come.
Mahomes passed for more than 400 yards in six games during his junior season at Texas Tech.
Kansas City then traded up to make him the No. 10 overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Since joining the Chiefs, Mahomes has thrown for 199 TDs and just 51 interceptions.
