Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is reportedly day-to-day after testing on his right hand failed to find a fracture, according to Andy Martino of SNY.

Alonso left Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers after being hit on the right hand by a pitch from James Paxton.

Brett Baty replaced Alonso at first base.

Expectations for the Mets in 2024 were much lower than they were to start the 2023 season. The organization recalibrated after flaming out so spectacularly.

Still, a wild-card berth didn’t look out of the question, and the players weren’t viewing this as a rebuilding year.

Instead, the Mets are 22-33 and fourth in the National League East. They trail the first-place Philadelphia Phillies by 16 games and are six games off the final wild-card spot.

Yet again, if there’s something that could go wrong with this franchise, it already has or probably will at some point.

Alonso getting hit by a pitch came less than an hour after the team announced closer Edwin Díaz is going on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement. The 29-year-old slugger has been his usual self at the plate. Through 54 games, he had 12 home runs with 26 RBI with a .758 OPS and a 122 OPS+.

Alonso’s injury comes at a time when his future with the Mets is far from certain.

He’s a free agent after the season, so it stands to reason he’s a strong candidate to be moved if he doesn’t have a long-term contract and the Mets’ performance doesn’t improve.

Thankfully, it seems like Alonso will make a quick return to the field without missing much time.
