This will be Woods’ 26th time participating in the major and he has a chance to make history. If he were to make the cut, it would be his 24th consecutive time making the cut at the tournament. This would break the previous record of 23, which is currently held by Woods, Fred Couples and Gary Player.
While an earlier version of Tiger would not be stressing too much about this, it will be challenging for Woods to get this done. He made the cut last year but was forced to withdraw due to aggravating plantar fasciitis in his right foot and also withdrew from his most recent start, the Genesis Invitational.
That came in January and he withdrew due to illness, but he will at least need to remain healthy through two rounds to vie for the record.
NBC golf analyst Notah Begay reported that Woods is working on a strategy to maintain the best possible health and that the practice round is helping him figure out how to move forward.
“He’s trying to formulate a strategy and approach that he can work within given the constraints that he’s presented with — and he’s got some constraints,” Begay said, per Mark Schlabach of ESPN. “He’s got zero mobility in that left ankle and really has low-back challenges now, which he knew he was going to have.”
The 2024 Masters is set to begin Thursday. The cut will be determined following Friday’s action.
