Rangers take narrow lead over Servette, Marseille beaten in Greece

Rangers won the first leg of their third-round UEFA Champions League qualifying tie 2-1 against Servette at Ibrox Stadium on Wednesday.

James Tavernier scored an early penalty to settle nerves before Cyriel Dessers scored a second for Rangers on the 15-minute mark.

The Swiss side had a route back into the game when Chris Bedia netted on the stroke of half-time.

But chances of a comeback faded when David Douline was sent off after an hour for a second yellow card.

The second leg takes place in Switzerland on Tuesday, August 15.

Former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang couldn’t help 10-man Marseille in his first start for the club, as they were dealt a narrow defeat to Panathinaikos.

Marseille almost held on after Geoffrey Kondogbia was dismissed for a second caution in the 65th minute, but a late Bernard strike has given Ivan Jovanovic’s side the advantage in the tie.

In the only other game on Wednesday, there were three goals in the first 15 minutes between Maccabi Haifa and Slovan Bratislava, as the Israeli side edged the first leg 2-1.

Dia Saba’s sensational curled effort from outside the box made the difference for Maccabi Haifa.

Teams will be fighting for spots in the final play-off round when all 10 second legs are played next Tuesday.

The 10 winners of the ties will join two automatic entrants in six two-legged ties.

The six teams that triumph will qualify for the Champions League 2023/24 group stages, while the losing teams will enter the Europa League.
