‘Really sorry’ -fire Moyes concedes West Ham ‘haven’t shown any toughness’

West Ham manager David Moyes is widely expected to be on his way out of the London Stadium after the club held talks with Julen Lopetegui last week. His position seems even more perilous after West Ham lost 5-0 to London rivals Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, and he said that he understood the club’s fans’ disappointment and said the team had underperformed.

David Moyes said he is “really sorry” for West Ham’s supporters after they witnessed their 5-0 defeat to Chelsea.

Chelsea were the winners in a one-sided London derby on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League, meaning the Hammers are almost certain to lose out on European football next season.

The defeat is the second consecutive away game in which they have conceded five times, with a 5-2 defeat to another local side, Crystal Palace, on April 21.

Moyes is under pressure as the team have won just once in their last eight league games, including four defeats.

The former Everton and Manchester United manager is yet to decide his future at the London Stadium amid rumours over the club’s plans for the future.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Moyes acknowledged the fans must have been disappointed.

“The fans have been great but I feel bad for them,” he said.

“I don’t normally have teams who get beaten like this but we are lacking some ingredients – mental toughness and leadership to get better results, or at least not get hammered.

“The fans played their part and I can only say I’m really sorry for how it played out.”

Despite lifting the UEFA Europa Conference League trophy last season, this has been a tougher campaign and the fans have grown restless.

Former Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui has held talks with West Ham over replacing Moyes next season, leaving the incumbent’s position in serious doubt.

Moyes added that the side have underperformed this season.

“We’ve had too many games this season where we haven’t shown any toughness, togetherness, leadership, or taken ownership of the performance,” he said.

“I’m the manager so I take ownership of that but sometimes the players have to take responsibility as well.”
