The Cleveland Browns may be without one of their best players on Sunday against the undefeated San Francisco 49ers.
Quarterback Deshaun Watson is considered day-to-day with a rotator cuff contusion, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. He did not practice on Monday and his status is considered to be determined.
“I know it’s a broken record, but really just treat it day by day,” Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters. “He’s doing everything in his power, working around the clock with rehab. So he’s just doing what he’s being told to do in terms of his rehab process.”
Watson, who was unexpectedly sidelined from a Week 4 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, injured his shoulder on a running play in a Sept. 24 win over the Tennessee Titans. He remained in the game and threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
The 28-year-old was limited in practice ahead of Week 4 but the Ravens expected him to play before ultimately ruling him out. Cleveland is coming off its bye week, so Watson seemingly got some extra rest.
This marks Watson’s first full season with the Browns after serving an 11-game suspension and being fined $5 million in 2022 for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy after being accused by more than two dozen women of sexual misconduct.
Watson has appeared in three games for Cleveland this season, leading the team to a 2-1 record in his starts. He has completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 678 yards and four touchdowns against two interceptions, in addition to rushing for 83 yards and one score.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson, a 2023 fifth-round pick out of UCLA, filled in for Watson in Week 4. He completed 19 of 36 passes for 121 yards and also tossed three interceptions.
If Watson is unable to suit up against the 49ers, Thompson-Robinson would be in line to get the start against one of the NFL’s most formidable defenses.
