Colorado is reportedly set to play Saturday’s game against Colorado State without starting center Van Wells.

Pete Thamel of ESPN reported Wells has been limited in practice after suffering a leg injury last week against Colorado. True freshman Hank Zilinskas will start in Wells’ place.

Offensive line play has been one of the few weaknesses for the Buffaloes early this season. Colorado has allowed 12 sacks through its first two games, with quarterback Shedeur Sanders having to show his toughness by standing in the pocket and getting rocked.

Sanders has emerged as a Heisman contender through the first two weeks of the regular season, throwing for 903 yards and six touchdowns without an interception. His 89 pass attempts rank second among quarterbacks who have played in two games, sitting behind only Temple’s E.J. Warner.

Losing Wells will be a difficult blow in a spot that’s already a concern for Colorado. Zilinskas filled in admirably last Saturday against Nebraska, but most of his snaps came with the Buffaloes having the game well in hand.

This week’s rivalry game against Colorado State will be in a full stadium champing at the bit after Colorado coach Deion Sanders and Colorado State coach Jay Norvell traded barbs in recent days.

We’ll have to see if the freshman will be able to withstand the limelight.
