Former Super Eagles attacker Oladimeji Lawal has backed new Nigeria coach Finidi George to achieve success with the national team, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed the appointment of Finidi earlier this month. Recall that the former Ajax man was employed to take charge of the Super Eagles on a interim basis after Jose Peseiro left the job in March after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Finidi had previously worked as an assistant under Peseiro, spending 20 months on the job. Still, his experience has still been questioned because aside from the the Enyimba coaching job and the assistant role at PEC Zwolle, Finidi has not worked elsewhere.
Nonetheless, some retired Nigerian players like Ifeanyi Udeze and Paul Obiefule have backed Finidi to do well with the Super Eagles.
The latest former Super Eagles player to show support for Finidi is Lawal, who scored one goal in three appearances for Nigeria. He
“I sincerely think Finidi won’t disappoint Nigerians, knowing fully the task at hand,” Obiefule told Complete Sports.
“Having been with Jose Peseiro for 20 months, I want to believe he would have learned a few things and, with his own additional knowledge, be ready for the task at hand.
“He knows the players and will definitely deliver the job regardless of the pressure.”
Finidi’s immediate task is to help the Super Eagles get past South Africa and Benin in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in June. He has been handed a one-year deal, but it could eventually run into two years if he produces positive results.
