While initial reports were that Dillon Brooks’ sign-and-trade to the Houston Rockets was worth $80 million over four years, it appears that the 27-year-old wing is getting a slightly better payday.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Saturday that Brooks’ deal with Houston actually landed at four-years, $86 million and that incentives can bring it all the way up to $90 million.
The former Memphis Grizzlies’ defensive stopper has really cashed in after making $38 million total over his first six seasons in the league.
Brooks initially signed with the Rockets on July 1, continuing an already impressive offseason for the franchise that also added Fred VanVleet and Jeff Green to help bring some veteran guidance to a young, talented squad.
The 2022 All-Defensive Second-Team spent his entire career with Memphis, becoming a key piece to the Grizzlies’ core over the last several seasons.
However, a dip in his output both in the regular season and playoffs led to the organization deciding to move on from him. Instead, the Grizzlies decided to trade for former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart, who can give Memphis a bit more offensive firepower than Brooks while still being elite on the other end of the floor.
Last season Brooks averaged 14.3 points per game to go along with 3.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists on 39.6 percent shooting from the field.
But despite the offensive struggles, his defensive capabilities will keep him on the floor for a coach like Ime Udoka, who prioritizes that side of the ball and who will be relying on Brooks to be the defensive focus of the team.
In addition to all his tangible skills, Brooks will also be required to help mentor some of the young talent on the Rockets’ roster like Jalen Green, Amen Thompson and Jabari Smith Jr., all recent lottery picks that are still looking to bring the franchise closer to playoff contention.
And although Brooks certainly had his antics in Memphis, he was definitely one of the leaders on that squad that was one of the best in the West over the past couple of years.
