Cristiano Ronaldo admitted that he felt he let Portugal down during their Euro 2024 last 16 clash with Slovenia. The Selecao narrowly advanced to the quarter-finals after a goalless draw over 120 minutes, eventually triumphing 3-0 in a penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa emerged as Portugal’s hero by saving all three of Slovenia’s penalty attempts.
Despite the victory, Ronaldo had a chance to secure the win in extra time when Portugal were awarded a penalty. However, Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak managed to tip Ronaldo’s shot onto the post, leading to tears for the 39-year-old forward. Ronaldo redeemed himself by scoring Portugal’s first penalty in the shootout, with Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva also converting their spot-kicks to ensure Roberto Martinez’s side advanced.
Ronaldo’s emotional reaction
Speaking to reporters after the match, a visibly emotional Ronaldo, who broke down in tears after Oblak’s save, shared his thoughts on the intense evening in Frankfurt. “Initially, I was heartbroken, but now I am elated,” he admitted. “This is the nature of football. It takes you from extreme lows to extreme highs.”
Ronaldo continued, “We had a chance to take the lead, and I missed it. Oblak made a great save. I need to review the footage to see if I struck it correctly. I’m filled with mixed emotions – both sadness and joy. It’s crucial to celebrate our progress. We’re performing excellently and committed to going all the way.”
He emphasized, “We created more opportunities and deserved to advance.”
Portugal set for quarter-final clash with France
Portugal’s quarter-final match will see them face France on Friday night. Les Bleus secured their spot in the next round by defeating Belgium 1-0 in their last 16 encounter, with a late own goal from Jan Vertonghen being the decisive factor.
This upcoming match marks the third consecutive European Championship in which Portugal and France will meet. The Selecao famously won the 2016 final thanks to Eder’s extra-time goal and played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at the postponed Euro 2020.
The stage is set for another exciting encounter between these two football giants, as Portugal aims to continue their journey in Euro 2024.
