Royce Lewis (hamstring) heads to IL

7:40 PM UTC

Sept. 22: INF Royce Lewis placed on IL; OF/1B Jordan Luplow recalled from Triple-A St. Paul
Lewis, who left Tuesday night’s game at Cincinnati after experiencing pain in his left hamstring during an at-bat in the eighth inning, was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Sept. 21, with a left hamstring strain.

In his last 26 games since Aug. 23, Lewis has 11 home runs with 35 RBIs and a 1.051 OPS.

To replace Lewis on the 28-man roster, the Twins recalled Luplow. In 26 games for the Twins this season, Luplow has hit .235 with five extra-base hits and four RBIs.

Sept. 20: DH/CF Byron Buxton (right knee inflammation) to begin rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul on Thursday
The Twins announced that Buxton will start at designated hitter for Triple-A St. Paul on Thursday and aim to get three or four plate appearances in his first game action since Sept. 1, when his initial rehab assignment with the Saints was halted due to a flare-up of pain in his troublesome right knee, which was later diagnosed as inflammation and irritation to the medial plica, a membrane flap in the knee. He received a cortisone injection and began building up baseball activity, with the Twins having aimed to get him back into action before the end of the Triple-A season this coming Sunday.

Sept. 20: SS Carlos Correa placed on IL; OF Trevor Larnach recalled from Triple-A St. Paul
Though Correa got two games off last week to rest the troublesome left foot that has been pained by plantar fasciitis since May, he still had to exit Monday’s series opener in Cincinnati after he aggravated it while tracking down a popup in shallow left field. A day after undergoing an MRI, Correa was placed on the 10-day injured list to address the discomfort from a rupture to the central cortex of the fascia, though the Twins expect him to return in time for the postseason. Larnach was recalled to take his place on the active roster.

Correa and the Twins have tried to treat the pain since it began, but they’ve been unsuccessful, and he has played through it all season because he felt the need to be on the field for the team — even at less than 100 percent.

Sept. 20: 3B Royce Lewis (hamstring) day to day, MRI scheduled for Thursday
Lewis was pulled during his eighth-inning plate appearance in the Twins’ 7-0 victory over the Reds on Tuesday after his hamstring tightened on him while fouling off a pitch. The Twins later announced that Lewis is day to day with left hamstring tightness, and he will undergo an MRI on Thursday morning in Minneapolis after doing some exercise bike work on Wednesday. Lewis said on Thursday that the hamstring still felt around the same as it did following his exit.

“In terms of concern, I think it was just more frustration,” Lewis said. “I’m tired of stupid injuries, right? But this is the least of my worries of the past injuries. I joked with [head athletic trainer Nick Paparesta] for a second. I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s not the ACL, so I know it’s not a full year.’”

Sept. 19: 1B/OF Joey Gallo (left foot contusion) begins rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul; RHP Chris Paddack and RHP Jorge Alcala have rehab assignments transferred to Triple-A St. Paul
The addition of three more rehabbing players to St. Paul’s roster makes it five ramping up for a possible impact at the end of the Major League season and into the playoffs, with Brock Stewart and Nick Gordon already having started rehab assignments with the Saints last week. Though Paddack had been starting at the lower levels on his rehab assignment, he’ll move to the bullpen for St. Paul, as is expected to be his eventual role for the Twins.

DH/OF Byron Buxton (right hamstring strain)
Expected return: September
Buxton will begin another rehab assignment on Sept. 21 as the designated hitter for Triple-A St. Paul, the Twins announced. He had once again been ramping up his baseball activity with hitting, throwing and running with the hope that he could make it back into rehab games before the end of the Triple-A season on Sept. 24.

He began his initial rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul on Aug. 30, but he was removed from his second game on Sept. 1 after two at-bats when he experienced inflammation and irritation in the medial plica (a membrane flap) in his right knee. Buxton was pulled off his rehab assignment on Sept. 5 to undergo treatment on the knee, and he has since progressed back to tee work and cage work. (Last updated: Sept. 20)

SS Carlos Correa (plantar fasciitis)
Expected return: Possibly Sept. 29
The Twins placed Correa on the IL after he sustained a full-thickness tear of the central cortex of the plantar fascia in his left foot, resulting in inflammation and discomfort that will be helped by taking time to rest. Correa and the Twins remained confident that the shortstop will be ready for postseason play and that the tear could ultimately be a positive development in his recovery from the plantar fasciitis, which has limited his performance since it first arose in May.

“When I’ve talked to the players who had it before, they say once it tore for them and they got better, they didn’t feel it again,” Correa said. “I’m hopeful that’s the case for me and it’s a one-and-done type of thing only this year. Looking forward, I don’t want to deal with this for much longer.” (Last updated: Sept. 20)

1B/OF Joey Gallo (left foot contusion)
Expected return: September
Gallo began a rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul at first base on Sept. 19 after X-rays revealed no damage to his left foot. (Last updated: Sept. 20)

RHP Chris Paddack (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: Late September
Paddack threw 58 pitches in a four-inning start for Double-A Wichita on Sept. 12 in a continuation of a rehab assignment that began with Class A Fort Myers on Sept. 5. He had his rehab assignment moved to Triple-A St. Paul on Sept. 19, when he struck out five in three scoreless innings of relief. Head athletic trainer Nick Paparesta said following that outing that Paddack was ready to be activated to the MLB roster whenever needed.

“I’m super excited,” Paddack said earlier in the month. “I feel outstanding, I feel healthy, I feel strong, I feel explosive. I’ve learned, compared to the first go-around, this one is way better. All the I’s are dotted and T’s are crossed, and I’ve just got to continue to stay in stride. Everything has been going great.” (Last updated: Sept. 20)

RHP Brock Stewart (right elbow soreness)
Expected return: Possibly Sept. 22
Stewart continued his rehab assignment by topping out at 98.9 mph as he threw a scoreless inning of relief on Sept. 19 for Triple-A St. Paul, and head athletic trainer Nick Paparesta said after the outing that Stewart was ready to be activated to the MLB roster whenever needed.

Stewart’s first buildup progression was interrupted on July 29, when a recurrence of soreness in his right forearm caused him to need extra recovery time. (Last updated: Sept. 20)

RHP Jorge Alcala (right radial stress fracture)
Expected return: Possibly September
Alcala had his rehab assignment moved up to Triple-A St. Paul on Sept. 19, when he threw a scoreless inning of relief on seven pitches. Head athletic trainer Nick Paparesta said after that outing that Alcala could be activated to the MLB roster whenever needed.

The Twins placed Alcala on the IL on May 16 after he was unable to participate in his throwing program without discomfort. Further tests revealed a stress fracture to the radius bone in his right forearm, an injury without much precedent among pitchers, according to Paparesta. (Last updated: Sept. 20)

OF/INF Nick Gordon (right tibia fracture)
Expected return: Possibly September
Gordon began a rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul on Sept. 15 and will remain with the Saints through the end of the Triple-A season, head athletic trainer Nick Paparesta said.

“Honestly, that’s up to the guys that it is up to,” Gordon said about his roster status. “For me, it’s just go out and play hard. Those kind of things don’t really cross my mind. I have one job. That’s to go and play baseball. I look forward to doing that, wherever I am, however I am. Let’s do it.” (Last updated: Sept. 20)

3B Jose Miranda (right shoulder impingement)
Expected return: 2024
Miranda traveled to Birmingham, Ala., for a pre-surgical consultation on Sept. 13 and is expected to undergo a surgical procedure soon. The Twins expect to provide additional details following completion of the procedure.

An MRI exam confirmed the diagnosis of an impingement in Miranda’s shoulder after he was scratched from the Twins’ July 14 game against the A’s with a flareup of the soreness that had bothered him since Spring Training and caused his withdrawal from the World Baseball Classic. He received a platelet-rich plasma injection on July 17 and was shut down for three weeks before he began throwing activity. (Last updated: Sept. 13)

RHP Oliver Ortega (left lumbar strain)
Expected return: 2024
The Twins placed Ortega on the 15-day IL on Aug. 24, two days after he exited during the middle of a plate appearance in the seventh inning of the club’s eventual loss to Milwaukee. They transferred him to the 60-day IL on Aug. 28. (Last updated: Aug. 28)

RHP José De León (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: 2024
De León underwent successful Tommy John surgery on July 19 with Dr. Chris Camp, the Twins’ medical director and director of high performance, after blowing out his elbow for the second time against the Tigers on June 24. He exited that game against Detroit before he even faced a batter, as he said he felt something akin to an “electric shock” in his right elbow on his final warmup pitch, causing him to drop his glove, immediately clutch his elbow and run off the mound.

Per the Twins, the procedure was a UCL reconstruction with an internal brace, which was also accompanied by an osteophyte removal, an ulnar nerve decompression and a flexor/pronator tendon repair. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list on Aug. 3. (Last updated: Aug. 3)

RHP Tyler Mahle (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: 2024
Mahle, who was removed from his start on April 27 vs. Kansas City with noticeably diminished velocity, underwent Tommy John surgery on May 22 with Dr. Keith Meister. The club’s original plan was to shut Mahle down for at least four weeks and seek a second opinion upon transferring him to the 60-day injured list.

The right-hander was acquired by the Twins from the Reds in a Trade Deadline deal last Aug. 2 and is set to become a free agent after this season. (Last updated: May 22)
