Barrett’s contract is for one year and worth up to $9 million, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, who spoke to Barrett’s agents.
This comes after a five-season stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that saw him contribute to a Super Bowl victory in 2020 and earn two Pro Bowl nods and an All-Pro designation in 2019.
The 31-year-old has registered 59 career sacks and 125 quarterback hits and 400 total tackles in his nine-season career split between the Buccaneers and the Denver Broncos.
The signing comes after the Dolphins lost several defensive players, including defensive tackle Christian Wilkins and linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel, to the initial free agent frenzy after the legal tampering window opened Monday afternoon.
He was cut by the Buccaneers as a cap casualty in February and does not take long to find a new home with Miami. He joins a linebacker corps led by two-time Pro Bowler Bradley Chubb and 2021 first-round pick Jaelen Phillips, although both players notably suffered serious knee injuries during the 2023 season.
Miami went 11-6 in 2023 and fell in the Wild Card Round to the Kansas City Chiefs. It was the second consecutive playoff appearance for the franchise, but it still has not been victorious in a playoff game since 2000.
With Barrett bringing two-Super Bowl victories and 11 career playoff games to the table, Miami will get an experienced veteran to help it contend in a strong conference.
