Orlando Pirates are reportedly concerned about the team’s league form, with head coach Jose Riveiro being closely monitored. Soccer Laduma looks at five reasons why the Spanish coach should stay beyond the current season.
1. Embracing youngsters
Pirates hardly gave opportunities to youngsters and apart from Thabiso Monyane, in recent years there have not seen young players given a platform in the first team.

Riveiro has changed that outlook, as Relebohile Mofokeng has already attracted huge interest from Europe after his trial at Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, after he became a first team regular and has not even played a full season yet.
2. Emergence of Chaine
Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine was starting to build a name for himself before he got injured after his heroics in the MTN8 final.
Chaine has become one of the best goalkeepers in the league, especially using his feet, a strong quality in modern football, developed by goalkeeper coach Tyrone Damons, who came along as a new member in Riveiro’s staff.
3. Control of dressing room
Pirates have a big squad but Riveiro has managed to keep the egos in check, as players speak highly of how good he is in managing the squad.
Riveiro reportedly has keen interest in the player as a human being and takes care of the human side first, a supposed rare quality in a foreign coach, which makes players want to fight for him.

4. Ability to turn unknown players into stars
Not many coaches at big clubs can turn an unknown or unproven player into a big name star and Riveiro showed his eye for talent after he gave Monnapule Saleng his big break last season.
As reported by the Siya crew, Saleng is the subject of strong interest from two particular European clubs and perhaps the persistent interests are starting to affect his form.
Sandile Mthethwa, who was unknown before being given a platform by Riveiro, looks to be another breakout star on the horizon at Pirates.
5. Cup pedigree.
Riveiro has won three cup competitions in one and half years and that is more than any other coach in the PSL during that period.
The Spanish coach has shown that he has what it takes to deliver titles for the club and needs backing from management to sign top players, maybe even out of the South African market to compete with Mamelodi Sundowns for the league title.
