Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Themba Seli has given his opinion on the type of coach Amakhosi should employ next.

The struggling Soweto giants are currently in the market for a new coach, as the club looks to turnaround an almost nine-year trophy drought.

Amakhosi have made numerous coaching changes over the year, with Steve Komphela, Giovanni Solinas, Gavin Hunt, Ernst Middendorp, Arthur Zwane, Molefi Ntseki, and Stuart Baxter, all having a bite at the chance to bring back the glory days to Naturena.

Seli says that there is a likelihood that Chiefs cannot afford a big-name coach.

“The only coach they can afford at the moment is a foreign coach, not a big hitter or big coach,” Seli tells KickOff.

“They can’t afford Benni McCarthy. They cannot afford a big coach. They need to go for a white foreign coach. South African players don’t have respect for a black coach.

“They never listen to a black coach they treat him as a friend. Remember, there are big players there at Chiefs who need a foreign coach. Chiefs need a foreign coach who will come with his technical team. A coach who will be allowed to get rid of all the deadwood. It doesn’t matter if you are Keagan Dolly or Itumeleng Khune, if you are not adding anything to the club, you need to go,” Seli added.

“That foreign coach must bring his assistant because if you take Doctor Khumalo and put him there as an assistant, our players will listen to Doctor and not to the white foreign coach. Between a head coach and his assistant, players will always side with the one who speaks their language.

“They should look in countries like Serbia for a coach. Those guys are very disciplined,” the former defender concluded.
