The prize money on offer at the AFCON finals will have far reaching financial benefits for Bafana Bafana after negotiating their way to the semi-finals of the continent’s top tournament.
Hugo Broos has guided Bafana to their first semi-final since the year 2000 and set up a date against Nigeria on Wednesday which means another a 110km trip to Bouake from Yamoussoukro.

Whatever happens in the match against the Super Eagles, fact is that Bafana have surpassed expectations which was to merely get out of the group featuring two better ranked nations in Mali and Tunisia.
The silver lining for Bafana is that USD2,5 million (approx. R47,2 million) is already secured.
This is what each of the two semi-finalists will get for reaching the last four of this year’s tournament which is enjoying a 40% prize money increase from the previous competition held in Cameroon.
Proceeding to the final will carry a minimal USD4 million (approx. R75,6 million) with the champions then pocketing USD7 million (approx. R132 million).
With what is already in the bag for Bafana, it means rewards of approximately R1 million can be expected for each of the 23 players in the squad.
Sundowns players in the squad will be the biggest beneficiaries, with the Brazilians having banked USD 4 million (approx. R75,6 million) as winners of the inaugural African Football League.
From that AFL loot, at least R1 million was guaranteed for each player.
Another USD 4 million (approx. R75,6 million) is at stake for Sundowns players in the CAF Champions League with Rulani Mokwena’s favoured to finish as one of two top teams in their group and reach the quarter-finals.
Downs already have USD 700 000 (approx. R13,2 million) secured for reaching the group stages of the Champions League while a quarter-final place will carry USD 900 000 (approx. R17 million) in rewards which will ultimately reach USD 4 million (approx. R75,6 million) for the champions.
Further earnings will come in the domestic league with R15 million for winning the DStv Premiership just about as good as secured while there is R7 million to play for in the Nedbank Cup.

The Bafana squad has Ronwen Williams, Khuliso Mudau, Mothobi Mvala, Grant Kekana, Aubrey Modiba, Teboho Mokoena, Themba Zwane, Thapelo Morena, and Thapelo Maseko from Sundowns.
This is by far the biggest representation from one club for all the surviving teams at the tournament.
