The current state of some of the school toilets in various provinces.
THE Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Limpopo has strongly criticised the African National Congress (ANC) government following an incident where a grade 2 pupil from Lefatane Primary School in Ga-Makgoto, outside Polokwane, allegedly fell into a pit toilet on Wednesday, 24 July.
EFF provincial spokesman Jacob Lebogo condemned the ANC-led government for not getting rid of pit toilets at schools.
“The government hasn’t learnt from the tragic incident of Michael Komape, who drowned in a pit toilet at his school in 2014. If the ANC had built proper flushing toilets, we could have avoided such incidents,” Lebogo said.
Lebogo pointed out that despite President Cyril Ramaphosa’s claims that only 20% of schools use pit toilets, Lefatane Primary School’s among over 50 schools in the Botlokwa area still equipped with them.

He criticised the handling of the situation by the school’s staff, noting that it continued to traumatise the affected pupil.
However, Matome Taueatsoala, spokesman for the Limpopo Department of Education, clarified that the pupil wasn’t fully submerged in the pit toilet but became partially trapped in an Enviroloo manhole cover.
“A grade 1 pupil saw their peer climbing and jumping from one cover to another and getting trapped,” Taueatsoala said.
The parents were immediately informed and took the child for a medical examination, which confirmed that no injuries were sustained.
Taueatsoala reassured that the department’s committed to providing a safe learning environment and ensuring that pupils can study without fear.
