AFRIKA Mamas aspire to emulate the success of the five-time Grammy Award-winning group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, by winning international awards.

The Durban-based internationally acclaimed Mzansi female scathamiya group, discovered by Mambazo and spending much of its time overseas, is featured on American star Debe Gunn’s song, titled Christmas All Around the World.

This collaboration was recorded in November 2023 at the Ladysmith Black Mambazo studio in Durban and has been nominated for the Hollywood Independent Music Awards.

The ceremony is set to take place at Avalon Hollywood in California, USA on 18 July.

Afrika Mamas’ group leader, Ntombi Lushaba, expressed to Daily Sun their ambitions of winning a Grammy Award this year.

Ntombi revealed that they’ve received several international nominations, including Best A capella and Best Group at the One World Awards in the United Kingdom, among others.

However, their only local accolade to date is the Best A capella at the Cothoza Music Awards hosted by Ladysmith Black Mambazo in 2019, despite being nominated twice for the Samas.

“We’re hopeful that winning this award with Debe Gunn will open many doors for us and bring significant recognition. We formed our group in 1998 and have travelled to almost all countries in the world, but unfortunately, we don’t receive funding in Mzansi and have to finance our travels ourselves,” she said.

Ntombi said working closely with Ladysmith Black Mambazo has set them on the right path to achieving international recognition.

Regrettably, their nomination coincided with their time in Mzansi, and they will not be able to attend the awards ceremony on 18 July. However, Debe Gunn will accept the award on their behalf as she is in America.
