Over the last two seasons, Mamelodi Sundowns are reported to have spent R206m in transfers only! A hefty fee in their constant desire to dominate both locally and abroad. The club’s head coach Rulani Mokwena recently responded to questions around the club’s budget.

Various reports both locally and abroad state that Sundowns have spent €5.33m (R110m) in the 2022/23 season and €4.64m (R96m) in the 2023/24 campaign and that is only on transfers that were recorded. Other transfer fees were left undisclosed.
It is an open secret that Sundowns have the desire to conquer Africa and have the deep pockets to match. It is little wonder then that questions have been raised about the Brazilians’ actual budget, something which remains a mystery to Mokwena.
“This is the truth and I am honest – I don’t know how much we’re spending. I don’t know how much we pay for transfers, I don’t know how much people are earning on their contracts, it’s a part of the club that doesn’t sit on my table,” he told journalists at the club’s Chloorkop base.

“I’m fortunate that I own Black Poison and there we just fetch a player when we see him.
“I don’t know the budget at Al Ahly, I don’t know the budget at Wydad [Casablanca], I don’t know Sundowns’ budget either,” he says.
According to Transfermarkt, Sundowns’ most expensive player to date is Matthew Booth, who was signed by the club in the 2008/09 season for a fee of €2.3m (R47m).
