THE Jukulyn mass murder case, which led to the deaths of four people, has seen a significant development.

The victims included Thandi Dlamini (34), Phomolo Malakapatlo (28), Constable Mpho Kgobotlo (30), and 14-year-old Vuyolethu Ziwela, who lived in Soshanguve Block P, Tshwane.

This was revealed during the brief appearance of three suspects, Sipho Kgomo, George Nyathi, and Sizwe Msibi, in the Soshanguve Magistrates Court on Monday, 3 June.

Their case was remanded to Friday, 19 July, until the investigations are completed.

The state prosecutor said in court that the director of prosecution will take up the matter.

“In order to determine if the case should be referred to a higher court, the director of prosecution will evaluate it. In addition, he will be providing the findings of the postmortem, cellphone records, and balsamic reports that were still pending,” he said.

When asked by Magistrate Swartz if there was anything that needed to be addressed before recalling the matter, defence attorney Stephens Magoro remained very silent and offered no objection.

Instead, he responded with a no, giving the impression that he had given up on the case.

“I’m postponing the matter for finalisation of investigations. The matter will appear in this very same court on Friday, 19 July at 8.30am,” said the magistrate.

Families of the victims, who have never missed a court appearance since the case’s inception, are trying to cope with the deaths of their loved ones by finding ways to heal.

Phomolo’s sister, Koketso Molakapatlo, said she hasn’t yet given away her sister’s clothes and intends to wear one clothing of hers to court.

“I don’t know when it will end, but these young men have hurt us beyond measure. Every time I come to court and see these suspects, the pain starts all over again,” she said.

Nandipha Ziwele, the mother of young Vuyolwethu, said she recently started buying noodles despite not being a fan of noodles.

“I will keep her clothes as long as I need to. I’m also not ready to let go of them.”

She acknowledged that everyone grieves differently.
