Speaking to Andile Ncube on Metro FM, Mphela became very emotional when he heard his former coach’s message to him.
“He’s in to sales now with the motor industry — brilliant, brilliant idea — and with time, slowly, he must join the soccer: the coaching qualifications and if he has trouble with that I’m there to support him,” Mosimane said in a voice note that was played live on air.
“He knows he can just give me a call.”
Mphela seemed as though the message had brought him to tears, and admitted that if he listened to the former Al Wahda coach, perhaps he could have been more than what he has become.
“I never expected this, especially from coach Pitso, because I know he’s busy and obviously the things he said about me and our relationship, and we come a long way. He launched me, because people didn’t know about me when I was still in France and I think he’s someone that I owe my life to.
“He is a father figure to me actually because we also spoke about life and a lot of things and to be honest he tried to advise me about life and maybe if i listened to him i could’ve been more than I am now.”
The interviewer revealed that Pitso was proud of Mphela and stopped everything he had been doing to request that the voice note be played for him.
The retired soccer star had a glistening career in which he scored 62 goals and assisted 14 in 191 professional club appearances, as per Transfermarkt, He is also a 2-time Premiership winner and has an MTN8 medal.
Perhaps more impressively, the former South Africa international scored in the country’s historic 2010 FIFA World Cup, netting against France and beating the legendary Iker Casillas with a jaw-dropping free kick that brought the whole country to its feet.
Fast forward to present time, and the former striker attended the interview wearing his work uniform: a Volkswagen golfer. He revealed that he is not officially employed by the German automobile company, but is on a learnership programme to see whether or not he is able of reaching the targets set out for him.
