FORMER Ukhozi FM presenter Ngizwe Mchunu appeared briefly in the Randburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 27 September.

The 40-year-old is on trial for allegedly inciting public violence and breaching the Disaster Management Act related to the July 2021 unrest.

The case was postponed to 3 November for judgment.

During his court appearance, Ngizwe from Durban wore traditional attire. And his friends were also wearing the same attire to show him support.

His case dates back to July 2021 during protests against the arrest of former president Jacob Zuma, which ended in the loss of lives and livelihoods.

Looters destroyed shops and malls. It then caused chaos, which went on for about a week.

The former radio presenter allegedly uttered the war cry “Azikhale”, as a staunch Zuma supporter.

Ngizwe is facing three counts of incitement to commit public violence, failure of compliance with or in contravention of the regulations in respect of the restriction on the movement of persons, and convening a gathering.

He pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The inkosi yamabhinca, as Ngizwe calls himself, briefed the media after his court appearance on Wednesday.

Ngizwe said he believes what is being done to him is just an abuse of power.

“I’m being tortured and sad at the same time. This case has been dragging for so long,” he said.

Ngizwe said he was arrested for something that needed to be done for Zuma.

“He wasn’t going to jail at the age of 80. No, it doesn’t make sense. This is the age when someone comes out of jail, not going in.

“How can they do that to him while they know he is an old man? We can’t sit and watch while we know the justice,” he said.

Ngizwe said his case will serve as part of the South African history.

“I’m not afraid to die because I wasn’t here before. Death is something that I’m not afraid of,” he said.

Ngizwe said he was tired of coming to court for the same thing.

Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokeswoman Phindi Mjonondwane told Daily Sun that they had submitted everything from their office and were waiting for the judgment.

“We will see what happens on the 3rd of November.

“As the NPA, we are happy with the outcome so far, and everything is ready,” she said.
