IN the spirit of unity and humour, South Africans gathered around their screens on Wednesday night, 29 May, to enjoy a comedy roast that poked fun at the republic.
Airing on Comedy Central (DStv channel 129), the show featured a line-up of Mzansi’s comedians, including Celeste Ntuli, who shared their comedic take on the country’s political, social, and various issues over the past five years.
Celeste highlighted the show’s aim to address serious topics in a lighthearted manner.
“It’s a hilarious skit show taking a look at our political, social and any other South African issues we’ve dealt with in the past five years; where we come from, where we are now and where we’re going,” she said.
Celeste emphasised the importance of finding humour in serious matters, a trait she believes sets Mzansi apart.

“In other countries there are things that people can’t laugh about. We are in a space now worldwide where everything must be at a polar end; it’s either you are for or against something. Sometimes humour can provide a common ground to everything that people are having conversation about,” she said.
She said sometimes people don’t laugh at their or other people’s situations but at the craziness of the situation.
Nicholas Pule Welch, another comedian on the show, remarked on the significance of humour in reflecting on South Africa’s 30 years of democracy.
“The line between what’s serious and what’s funny is thin. Laughing at something doesn’t diminish its importance. It’s like they always say, you can laugh about anything but not with anyone,” he said.
