UMKHONTO Wesizwe (MK) party founder Jabulani Khumalo insists that the MK trademark is theirs.
Khumalo briefed journalists outside the Electoral Court, sitting in the High Court in Joburg on Tuesday, 26 March, after the court ruled there was nothing wrong with MK’s registration with the Independent Electoral Court (IEC).
“The MK trademark is ours. ANC never registered a trademark. They are lying, but we will tell them tomorrow,” he said.
Khumalo said on Wednesday, 27 March, MK will be in the Durban High Court to defend the ANC’s application to stop MK from using the name MK and the logo.
“We will be telling the ANC where they should go. Mk trademark is ours,” he said.
The ANC argues that the MK name and the logo that the new political party uses belong to the ruling party.
Former president Jacob Zuma announced in December 2023 that he would vote and campaign for the MK party.
MK was an ANC armed wing disbanded on 16 December 1993, 30 years before its namesake political party was formed.

Khumalo said he was not worried about stories that its presidential candidate Zuma is not eligible to be Mzansi’s president again since he was jailed without an option of a fine and that the constitution allows for an individual to be president for two terms.
“You must know that wherever Zuma’s name comes up, there’s propaganda and lies about him because he is a straightforward man. They know that when he takes over the government, all these thieves will be taken to court because we will be dealing with them. That’s why they are making all these funny stories.
“Zuma is going to be the president. There is no case against Zuma. He will be the president, whether you like it or not,” he said.

Khumalo said Zuma’s conviction and 15-year sentence by the Constitutional Court did not bar him from going to parliament.
He said there was no doubt that MK would win the upcoming elections.
“We have won,” he said.
He said the party has the constitution and will hold its manifesto launch soon.
“You don’t need to worry. We are not rushing. We are doing our things accordingly and at our pace because we know what we are doing,” said Khumalo.
The electoral court found nothing unlawful in registering the MK by the IEC deputy CEO, Mawethu Mosery, in December 2023.
