Back in October, the 64-year-old Sting confirmed that he would wrestle his final match at Revolution, ending a legendary career that began back in 1985.
After a brief and ill-fated run in WWE that saw Sting suffer a neck injury, he made his AEW debut in December 2020, shocking the wrestling world.
Sting was paired with Allin almost immediately, and they went on to team together nearly 30 times in traditional tag team matches and multi-man matches. Sting did not compete in any singles matches in AEW, and entering Revolution, he owned an undefeated record.
The biggest victory of Sting’s AEW career came back on the Feb. 7 episode of Dynamite when he and Allin defeated Ricky Starks and Big Bill for the AEW world tag team titles.
That marked Sting’s first title win in AEW, and his first major championship of any kind since his time in TNA.
Back when Sting announced his plan to retire after Revolution, The Young Bucks interrupted him before he could announce his desired opponents, which led to speculation that Sting and Darby vs. The Bucks was a near certainty.
It became even clearer in the weeks that followed, as The Young Bucks turned heel and embraced their status as AEW executive vice presidents. They even went so far as to attack Sting after Allin and Sting won the tag team titles.
A furious Allin agreed that he and Sting would put the championships on the line against The Young Bucks at Revolution, meaning Sting would end his career against one of the most accomplished tag teams in pro wrestling history.
Most fans seemingly had no strong feeling one way or the other regarding who would win at Revolution since there were positives to both Sting putting over The Young Bucks on his way out and to an all-time great like Sting going out on top.
Ultimately, AEW chose the feel-good story, as Sting ended his career as a champion after retaining against Matt and Nick Jackson.
