TCU vs. Oral Roberts final score, results: Dominant pitching keeps Horned Frogs season alive

TCU vs. Oral Roberts final score, results: Dominant pitching keeps Horned Frogs season alive

In a battle between land and air, the Horned Frogs grounded the Golden Eagles’ flight.

TCU defeated Oral Roberts on Tuesday to advance to the next round of the College World Series. They’ll take on the Florida Gators after their 6-1 victory.

The story on Tuesday was the bats suddenly going quiet for Oral Roberts after they caught fire coming into the matchup. They mustered seven hits and eight walks but only put one run on the board.

MORE: Updated 2023 MLB mock draft

TCU starter Cam Brown got things started, but it was Hunter Hodges who stole the show out of the bullpen with 3.1 dominant innings in relief. This game had everything, however.

A wild fifth inning that was dominated by long reviews, debates and confusion surrounding the rulebook ultimately became the sequences that pushed the game into blowout territory. The Golden Eagles tried to make it interesting at the end but went out with a whimper in Omaha.

Oral Roberts was Twin Snakes-starved for most of the afternoon, unable to nosh on their beloved gummy worm tradition. While that superstition ends for this tournament, TCU can continue their meals at IHOP — which would make anyone consider a stock purchase.

That not done yet feeling!#MCWS x @TCU_Baseball pic.twitter.com/sQEaV8mQRZ

But the real takeaway from Tuesday is that you should be buying stock in the Horned Frogs, who are making plenty of noise in an area of the country that is typically known for being quiet.

TCU vs. Oral Roberts live updates, highlights from College World Series

(All times Eastern)

5:39 p.m. — STRUCK HIM OUT AND THAT’LL DO IT! TCU KEEPS ON DANCING!

— TCU Baseball (@TCU_Baseball) June 20, 2023

5:35 p.m. — Cox keeps it going and gets himself another Twin Snakes snack. The tying run is in the on-deck circle. It’s up to Matt Hogan now.

5:33 p.m. — Quinn keeps the line moving and reaches with a walk. That draws a visit to the mound from TCU coach Kirk Saarloos with Jonah Cox coming up with two out and two on.

5:31 p.m. — Bouncing ball up the middle gets past Silva and trickles into center to keep ORU alive. McMurray passes the baton to Justin Quinn.

5:30 p.m. — Brothers flames out with a pop out for the second out. Jake McMurray is the last hope for the Twin Snakes-starved team.

5:30 p.m. — Blaze Brothers, which is a fantastic name, steps in as the second one up in the inning.

5:29 p.m. — Godman pops it up behind short. Anthony Silva waits for it to come down and there’s one out.

5:27 p.m. — Jacob Godman leads it off for ORU. Eight, nine and one in the Golden Eagles lineup are due up against Feser.

Bottom of ninth inning: TCU 6, ORU 1

5:25 p.m. — A strikeout ends the inning. Last chance coming up for ORU in the bottom of the ninth.

5:24 p.m. — WEB GEM! Holden Breeze saves a run for ORU with a gorgeous stop at third to record the second out of the inning.

5:22 p.m. — After the leadoff hitter reaches, TCU is back in business with a runner in scoring position after a sacrifice bunt.

Top of ninth inning: TCU 6, ORU 1

5:17 p.m. — With two outs, ORU earns its seventh walk of the day but can’t do anything with it. The bats just can’t get going and it seems that will doom the Golden Eagles today.

5:15 p.m. — Oral Roberts has been held to five hits today, so let’s take a quick break to look at today’s attendance in Omaha.

— NCAA Baseball (@NCAABaseball) June 20, 2023

5:12 p.m. — Cohen Feser is on for TCU in relief of Hunter Hodges — who did a masterful job in his relief effort.

Bottom of eighth inning: TCU 6, ORU 1

5:10 p.m. — This game has really picked up the pace now, with nothing really happening in the top of the eighth. Six outs remain for ORU.

5:04 p.m. — Austin Davis just keeps on raking. Another hit to start the eighth.

Top of eighth inning: TCU 6, ORU 1

4:59 p.m. — That does it for ORU after a sweet spin move throw across the diamond from Brayden Taylor. The clock is ticking on the Golden Eagles comeback hopes.

Brayden Taylor…WOW!! 🤯#MCWS #SCTop10 x 🎥 ESPN / @TCU_Baseball pic.twitter.com/WF6N0U2UcM

— NCAA Baseball (@NCAABaseball) June 20, 2023

4:55 p.m. — Hodges is preventing ORU from getting anything going. The Golden Eagles got one on, but still nothing happening for the designated home side.

Bottom of seventh inning: TCU 6, ORU 1

4:47 p.m. — TCU must be ready to get this game over with. They go down quickly to end the top of the seventh.

Top of seventh inning: TCU 6, ORU 1

4:42 p.m. — And Hodges delivers. Top the top of seventh we go!

4:37 p.m. — Hodges returns to the hill on a mission to post another quick inning.

Bottom of sixth inning: TCU 6, ORU 1

4:34 p.m. — Denton fans Richardson to end the threat and the bases loaded. TCU can’t push another run across, but still leads 6-1.

4:33 p.m. — Even after getting the benefit of the wild double play, ORU still hasn’t escaped the inning. Bases loaded for TCU now.

4:28 p.m. — We have a decision! After review, both runners are ruled out at third base for quite possibly the weirdest double play you’ll ever see. The ESPN broadcast is breaking down the rulebook’s language, which usually isn’t a good sign.

How about that double play?!#ORUBase | 📽️ESPN pic.twitter.com/QJ11dNUro6

— ORU Baseball (@ORUBaseball) June 20, 2023

4:27 p.m. — It has been a long, long review with seemingly no end in sight.

4:23 p.m. — And now we have another review. After a ground ball to short, ORU tracks down the runner caught between second and third to tag him out. But now there is question to whether the runner at third left the base while being tagged. Somewhere, someone is taking another jello shot to pass the time.

4:21 p.m. — Cade Denton arrives and immediately tosses a wild pitch. It’s ugly in Omaha.

4:17 p.m. — Two quick baserunners for TCU send ORU to the bullpen again. Two on, nobody out for the Frogs to lead off the sixth.

Top of sixth inning: TCU 6, ORU 1

4:10 p.m. — Hodges comes in and quickly strikes out Hogan to end the threat. But ORU has finally scored. Will it get the bats going?

— TCU Baseball (@TCU_Baseball) June 20, 2023

4:05 p.m. — Cox knocks one into right for a hit and drives in one to get ORU on the board! Savage is departing. Hunter Hodges is now arriving.

.@JonahCox02 puts us on the board!#ORUBase | 📽️ESPN pic.twitter.com/VNZkalVVqM

— ORU Baseball (@ORUBaseball) June 20, 2023

4:04 p.m. — Big strikeout from Savage, who gets Quinn swinging. Now he has to contend with Jonah Cox to keep ORU off the scoreboard.

4:02 p.m. — Maybe not. A hit and a walk have ORU quickly in business with one out.

3:58 p.m. — Savage returns to the hill for TCU. Let’s see if he figured out those funky arm angles during the long break. He should be well rested by now.

Bottom of fifth inning: TCU 6, ORU 0

3:56 p.m. — Dalton Patten comes on for the Golden Eagles and, finally, retires the side.

3:52 p.m. — 6-0 FROGS! Anthony Silva rips it past the diving third baseman Holden Breeze to plate two more. That’ll do it for Isaacs now, who leaves almost as fast as he entered.

Frogs up! 🐸#MCWS x 🎥 ESPN / @TCU_Baseball pic.twitter.com/aerG1IvpFM

— NCAA Baseball (@NCAABaseball) June 20, 2023

3:50 p.m. — Byrne can’t get on base, but a sacrifice fly does the job too. 4-0 TCU and ORU is in the fast lane on the highway to the danger zone.

3:49 p.m. — Tre Richardson now joins the hit parade and the bases are loaded for Kurtis Byrne, who already has two hits today.

3:46 p.m. — Isaacs is greeted by Cole Fontenelle who casually dumps one into center and now it’s officially 3-0 TCU.

Send one home!#MCWS x 🎥 ESPN / @TCU_Baseball pic.twitter.com/vFM4voZr3E

— NCAA Baseball (@NCAABaseball) June 20, 2023

3:44 p.m. — After the great balk debate of Omaha 2023, Caravalho’s day is done. ORU makes a pitching change, calling on the lefty Caleb Isaacs.

3:42 p.m. — We have answers. Depending on your point of view, you might not like them. Regardless, the final ruling is that the balk is reviewable. The play called a balk is not a balk, but the pitcher couldn’t throw over to third base there. The end result in the run being taken off the board, but the batter being awarded first after ball four on a pitch clock violation. Talk about a wild sequence in Omaha.

3:40 p.m. — There’s a delay here as the umpires debate whether the balk should’ve been called. The play is under review, if it is even reviewable. We don’t have an answer to that question either.

3:38 p.m. — ANOTHER BALK! Caravalho’s second gaffe of the day brings home two for TCU in this game and now it’s 3-0 Horned Frogs!

3:37 p.m. — After a botched double play opportunity, Nunez ended up on second and swipes third in a close play.

3:33 p.m. — Nunez rockets one into left for a hit to lead off the fifth.

Top of fifth inning: TCU 2, ORU 0

3:30 p.m. — The funky arm angles don’t come back to bite Savage, who escapes without allowing a run. ORU will look back on this inning as a missed opportunity if they fall short today.

3:29 p.m. — Savage is trying to change up his looks, dropping his arm angle like a Patrick Mahomes throw on Sundays. Unfortunately for Savage, he is not Mahomes.

3:26 p.m. — A wild Savage allows not only a stolen base but tosses a wayward pitch, allowing Mac McCroskey to advance to third.

3:25 p.m — Cox steals second, but is called out on batter interference after Matt Hogan strikes out.

Out here playin’ tag!#MCWS x 🎥 ESPN / @TCU_Baseball pic.twitter.com/iEGEDe91eH

— NCAA Baseball (@NCAABaseball) June 20, 2023

3:23 p.m. — With Cox aboard, Luke Savage comes in for TCU, taking over for Cam Brown.

3:19 p.m. — Cox wasn’t awarded first because he attempted to make contact. He earned his way on anyway with a hit up the middle and gets his Twin Snakes snack.

— ORU Baseball (@ORUBaseball) June 20, 2023

3:17 p.m. — The Golden Eagles do not have luck on their side in this one. Jonah Cox becomes the latest victim, taking a 96-MPH fastball off the hands on a bunt attempt. He will stay in after being looked at by the training staff.

3:16 p.m. — It’s said the balk was called by the home plate umpire because Caravalho didn’t declare if he was going to pitch from the stretch or the windup.

Bottom of fourth inning: TCU 2, ORU 0

3:14 p.m. — Caravalho escapes with only one run going up on the board. Austin Davis gave one a ride to the warning track, but it ends safely in the glove of ORU’s left fielder, Justin Quinn.

3:12 p.m. — A BALK! Caravalho gets called for a balk which drives in Byrne for TCU. It’s 2-0 Frogs. Will this rattle the ORU pitcher?

3:10 p.m. — Byrne gets his second hit of the day and Logan Maxwell crushes a double down the right field line. TCU is set up with second and third with two outs.

3:04 p.m. — The crowd falls silent in Omaha as Oral Roberts catcher Jacob Godman goes down in a heap of pain after taking a foul ball to a sensitive area. After a delay, he decides to tough it out and stay in. Never mess with a catcher.

3:01 p.m. — Brooks Fowlers day is done for the Golden Eagles. It’ll be Joshua Caravalho on in relief to begin the fourth.

Top 4 | Joshua Caravalho takes over on the mound.#ORUBase 0, TCU 1 pic.twitter.com/DO4mQOahi9

— ORU Baseball (@ORUBaseball) June 20, 2023

Top of fourth inning: TCU 1, ORU 0

2:58 p.m. — Brown fans Quinn and the Golden Eagles leave two stranded in the third.

B3 | What a job done by Cam Brown! Two walks to lead off the inning and two in scoring position with one out. He gets out of the jam without any damage on a pop out and a big strikeout.#FrogballUSA | #GoFrogs pic.twitter.com/lXlUulYGHd

— TCU Baseball (@TCU_Baseball) June 20, 2023

2:56 p.m. — Quinn steps in again after a lazy fly ball to right by Jake McMurray can’t drive one in.

2:54 p.m. — Luke Savage is the first man up for the Horned Frogs as the bullpen starts to crank. Meanwhile on the field, a sacrifice bunt puts runners at second and third with only one gone.

2:53 p.m. — Control is becoming an issue. Back-to-back walks for Cam Brown. ORU is in business to start the third inning as the bullpen gets busy for TCU.

2:51 p.m. — Brown won’t be replicating his last inning. A four pitch walk begins the bottom half of the third.

Bottom of third inning: TCU 1, ORU 0

2:49 p.m. — Down go the Frogs 1-2-3. Fowler gets through the inning unscathed.

2:47 p.m. — Taylor laces one into center, but the wind has other ideas. Instead of a trot around the bases, Taylor gets to trot back to the dugout after a loud out No. 2.

2:44 p.m. — The third inning begins with a one-pitch out for Fowler, who’s looking for a bounce back inning.

Top of third inning: TCU 1, ORU 0

2:41 p.m. — If you blinked, you missed that half inning. Brown makes lightning fast work of ORU to set them down in order 1-2-3.

— TCU Baseball (@TCU_Baseball) June 20, 2023

2:38 p.m. — Brown back to the bump for TCU, trying to hold onto this 1-0 lead.

Bottom of second inning: TCU 1, ORU 0

2:36 p.m. — Fowler escapes without allowing the crooked number. 1-0 TCU after the top of the second.

2:35 p.m. — Fowler is up to 45 pitches now and has been doomed by walks. Three in the inning has the ORU pitcher in deep, deep trouble.

2:33 p.m. — And for good reason. Fowler loses Davis and forces home the first run of the game. TCU takes a 1-0 lead.

— TCU Baseball (@TCU_Baseball) June 20, 2023

2:32 p.m. — Davis, according to the ESPN broadcast has the mantra on the inside of his hat and helmet, “see ball, hit ball.” Definitely danger time for ORU now.

2:31 p.m. — Davis reached base all four times on Sunday, so it might not be the hitter Fowler wants to see.

2:30 p.m. — If TCU brings a run across, it’ll come from the bottom third of the order here. Logan Maxwell works a walk to load the bases with the ninth place hitter Austin Davis coming up.

2:28 p.m. — BIG strikeout from Fowler as he gets Anthony Silva swinging for the second out.

2:26 p.m. — TCU is in business now. Kurtis Byrne smashes a double down the line to give the Frogs second and third with only one out.

2:23 p.m. — Mirroring Brown’s first inning, Fowler starts the second with a walk. We’ll find out in the bottom half if Brown is a fan of symmetry, matching Fowler’s first.

Top of second inning: TCU 0, ORU 0

2:20 p.m. — And just like that, Brown works around the leadoff walk. A double play ends the inning and TCU escapes without any damage on the scoreboard.

2:19 p.m. — Survey says — he cannot. At least this time around.

2:18 p.m. — Justin Quinn steps in now, trying to keep his 18-game hitting streak alive.

2:16 p.m. — Brown is trying to come out firing and is missing early. First inning struggles have plagued him in the past and a five-pitch walk gets the leadoff hitter on for ORU.

2:14 p.m. — It’s Cam Brown’s turn to take the mound. The junior flamethrower has struggled at times, but as long as his control doesn’t betray him, we could be watching Brown for a long time this afternoon.

Bottom of first inning: TCU 0, ORU 0

2:12 p.m. — TCU’s start third baseman Brayden Taylor steps in to face Fowler and later looks at strike three. Fowler worked quickly through the opening half inning and the Frogs go down quietly.

Back-to-back K’s for Fowler in a scoreless first!#ORUBase | 📽️ESPN pic.twitter.com/yDTsLh6GYn

— ORU Baseball (@ORUBaseball) June 20, 2023

2:10 p.m. — ORU’s Brooks Fowler makes quick work of Nunez for the first out of the afternoon. Then quickly strikes out the TCU catcher Karson Bowen for the second out.

2:08 p.m. — Let’s play ball! Elijah Nunez steps into the box and we are underway.

Top of first inning: TCU 0, ORU 0

2:06 p.m. — The teams have taken the field. We are almost set for baseball.

2:05 p.m. — It’s a hot one in Omaha. 87 degrees and sunny skies so grab the sunscreen and perhaps, a snow cone too.
