A teenager is facing a felony weapons charge in connection to the mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade that killed one person and left nearly two dozen others wounded.
Per ESPN, authorities said a 16-year-old boy was arraigned Tuesday on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon in shooting at a person, which would be punishable by between five and 15 years in prison for an adult offender. A Jackson County Family Court judge will hold a hearing to determine if the teenager will be tried as an adult, authorities added.
The teenager has been held in custody since the Feb. 14 shooting on a lesser felony charge of resisting arrest. A second 16-year-old is also being held on a lesser gun charge.
In addition to the juveniles facing charges, two men were also charged with second-degree murder and several weapons counts by state authorities in connection to the shooting. Police said the incident occurred after one group of people confronted another group for staring at them.
In the aftermath of the shooting, three other Missouri men were charged with federal counts related to the illegal purchase of high-powered rifles and guns with extended magazines. Federal court documents stated that 12 people were brandishing firearms and six people fired their weapons during the championship celebration, which had an estimated 1 million people in attendance in downtown Kansas City.
Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were among the many players to react to the shooting.
“I am heartbroken over the tragedy that took place today,” Kelce stated. “My heart is with all who came out to celebrate with us and have been affected. KC, you mean the world to me.”
