The Ineos Grenadier is intended to carry on where the old Land Rover Defender left off, and to do that, it needs to be plenty versatile. The chassis cab version of the Defender, for example, has been used for all sorts in the past – fire engines, crane platforms and even hipster-friendly food trucks.
Now, though, you can do all that with the Grenadier, which has its own chassis cab variant of the Grenadier Quartermaster pick-up. Very imaginatively called the Quartermaster Chassis Cab, it uses the same extended wheelbase as the pick-up, giving it an extra 305mm between the axles.

Here, though, the ladder frame is completely naked from the five-seater double cab backwards, giving aftermarket converters a “blank canvas” to work with. Ineos notes that quite a few “specialist conversions” including ones made for the emergency services already exist – the Chassis Cab should make the conversion companies’ work a lot easier.
As with other Grenadiers, you can have it with either a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol, or a turbodiesel engine of the same size, both sourced from BMW. All will use an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox powering all four wheels.

The Chassis Cabs will be built alongside other Grenadiers in Hambach, France, where Mercedes-Benz used to make Smart-branded vehicles.
At £63,816 including VAT it’s now the cheapest version of the Grenadier, but only just – the former entry point to the range was the £64,500 two-seater Utility Wagon.

Ineos Automotive’s commercial director George Ratcliffe had this to say about the new addition to the Grenadier line-up:
“The Grenadier’s body-on-frame construction already provides huge versatility for customisation, and we know from customer configurations that our vehicles are being used equally between commercial and leisure users. The ‘blank canvas’ Chassis Cab variant allows even greater versatility, from the basic trayback for agricultural use through recovery and emergency services to tourism, presenting an ideal platform for an overlanding camper.”
