The Volkswagen ID.7 GTX Tourer Is A High-Performance Electric Load Lugger

Volkswagen’s having a bit of a field day with its GTX electric performance badge. At the same time as unveiling its take on the electric hot hatch in the shape of the ID.3 GTX, it’s shown off a full EV interpretation of that most beloved of automotive sub-genres among enthusiasts: the fast estate car.

Based on the recently revealed ID.7 Tourer, there aren’t a huge amount of surprises here. Where the standard ID.7 has so far only been single-motor and rear-wheel drive, the GTX gets a dual-motor, all-wheel drive setup knocking out 335bhp, making it Volkswagen’s most powerful estate car ever.

Volkswagen hasn’t provided acceleration figures but has said that the top speed is electronically limited to 112mph. An upgraded 86kWh battery will be theoretically chargeable from 10 to 80 per cent in under half an hour and, while range is also unconfirmed, it likely won’t match the less powerful, single-motor ID.7.

Much like the ID.3 GTX, it gets some model-specific bumpers and front lighting signatures, and standard 20-inch wheels, with 21-inch items available as an option. Interior changes, too, are pretty minimal, largely amounting to some nice-looking GTX-exclusive sports seats (with optional 12-way adjustment) and plenty of red accents.

Otherwise, it’s as we saw with the standard ID.7 Tourer a few weeks ago: a sizeable 605-litre load capacity with rear seats up, rising to 1714 litres with them folded flat. It has ChatGPT integration and the ID.7’s new ‘wellness app’ that tweaks various interior settings, and can be specced with a nifty panoramic roof that can flip between being transparent and opaque thanks to a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal layer. We have no idea what that is.

Orders for the ID.7 GTX Tourer open later in spring, and unsurprisingly, it’s about to be joined by a GTX version of the saloon, too. Volkswagen is also close to revealing a GTX version of the ID. Buzz people carrier, which means all of its Euro-market full EV offerings will have a GTX variant. We look forward to seeing if they can cash the performance cheques they’re writing.
