Gary Woodling, a top District 37 Enduro rider leaps the Suzuki PE 175 through the branches of an Indian Dunes tree for a cover shot of the July 1980 issue. The PE I75 shined in some areas:  quick change wheels, good steering, nice plastic components, comfy suspension, waterproof brakes, a stealthy exhaust and a decent chassis. It wasn’t a powerhouse which softened the appeal and kept it more in the play bike arena, than a full A-level enduro machine.

I always liked this shot, the play of shadows during a late afternoon riding session in the high desert makes it work. The wagon? The KX500 was my favorite steed for both moto and off-road in 1991. Below, testing at Glen Helen on the same machine. The KX500 made way better bottom to mid power than the Honda CR500, making it far more versatile and palatable for off-road.
