Charlie Woods, the 15-year-old son of golfing legend Tiger Woods, qualified for the 2024 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship on Wednesday, per Lukas Weese and Brendan Quinn of The Athletic.
The younger Woods shot a 1-under 71 to win his qualifying event at the Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs, Florida. It’s been quite the year for Charlie Woods, as he also won a high school state title in Florida in the fall.
His father is the only three-time winner of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championships, claiming the title in 1991, 1992 and 1993. Other notable champions of the event include Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth.
Charlie Woods will be one of 264 players in the field, all 19 years old or younger, with the event being held at the North and South Courses of Oakland Hills. The first two rounds will be stroke play, one on each course, with the top 64 players advancing to match play on the South Course.
He’s appeared in the past four PNC Championships as his father’s playing partner, and also served as something of swing coach for Tiger during the U.S. Open earlier in June.
“I trust him with my swing and my game,” he told reporters. “He’s seen it more than anybody else in the world. He’s seen me hit more golf balls than anyone. I tell him what to look for, especially with my putting. He gave me a couple little side bits today, which was great, because I get so entrenched in hitting certain putts to certain pins, I tend to forget some of the things I’m working on. We have a great relationship and rapport like that, and it’s a wonderful experience for both of us.”
The roles may be reversed at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championships, as Charlie will have the benefit of a three-time winner of the event in his corner.
