Timothy Weah embracing new challenge at Juventus

Timothy Weah has experienced challenges during his time in France and Scotland, and although moving to Serie A could be a tough adjustment at first, the U.S. men’s national team attacker is ready for his new challenge.

Weah joined Juventus on a permanent deal from Ligue 1 side Lille earlier this summer, taking the next step in his growing career in Europe. The 23-year-old received plenty of interest over the past two seasons which included clubs from England, Spain, and elsewhere.

However, once Juventus became linked with Weah’s services, it didn’t take for the American forward to agree to a move.

“[It was a] Very easy choice for me,” Weah said Thursday in a press conference. “From the moment I heard that they were interested, I knew that I wanted to come here and I wanted to create my own history here and be a part of this beautiful organization.

“From a young age my dad has always supported Juventus so I think it was such a coincidence that, you know, that opportunity came,” Weah added. “And I’m just so, so happy and proud to be here.”

Weah’s first-team career at Paris Saint-Germain started with him fighting for a role in the attacking corps, which also led to a loan spell with Scottish Premiership giants Celtic. After joining Lille in 2019, Weah’s versatility was used in multiple ways including recently being used as a wingback and fullback in Paulo Fonseca’s system.

His move to Juventus comes at an important time for the Serie A side, who recently watched Colombian international Juan Cuadrado depart to sign a one-year contract with Inter Milan. Cuadrado, 25, totaled over 300 appearances in eight seasons with the Old Lady, scoring 26 goals and registering 65 assists across all competitions.

Weah won’t have the opportunity to partner with Cuadrado during his first season in Turin, but is motivated to fill the shoes of the veteran winger in a big way.

“Definitely a responsibility, because what he’s done at the club has been amazing, I mean for me he’s a legend,” Weah said about replacing Cuadrado in the squad. “Just watching his every move, his plays and what he’s done for the club has been great. And, you know, I can only just be inspired.

“So, you know, I just pray to God and hopefully, you know, I put in the work, work hard and… its definitely some big shoes to fill. But I’m ready for the challenge.”

Juventus kicks off its U.S. tour on Saturday against Barcelona on Saturday.
