According to a report by Turron Davenport at ESPN, the Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms with former Seattle Seahawks strong safety Jamal Adams. Adams was cut by Seattle in March, saving the team a boat load of salary cap room ($17 million) for the 2024 season. However, Adams is also costing them over $20 million in dead money this year. After taking the full brunt of that dead money hit the Seahawks will be completely out from under Adams’ contract in 2025, though.
A former first-round draft pick by the New York Jets out of LSU, for a time Adams was arguably the best safety in the NFL, earning three straight Pro Bowl nominations from 2018-2020 and one first-team All-Pro nod in 2019. Adams excelled at disrupting the action around the box and getting pressure on quarterbacks as well as any DB ever has.
Despite his talent, in July of 2020 the Jets traded Adams to the Seahawks in exchange for two first-round draft picks, a deal that may go down as the worst in franchise history for Seattle. Soon after, they signed Adams to a fat new contract that made him the highest-paid safety in the league.
Predictably, the deal turned sour quickly. After a strong 2020 season that saw Adams post 9.5 sacks injuries began to take their toll. He missed nine games total in his first two years, followed by 16 games in 2022 and another eight games last season. All together, he played as many games in a Seahawks uniform as he missed due to injury. Adams also frequently struggled in coverage, making him an easy cut once the financial numbers made sense for the front office.
Where he lines up for the Titans remains to be seen, but head coach Mike Macdonald and general manager John Schneider have both said they’d consider re-signing Adams to play as an off-ball linebacker full-time.
