Manchester United Women’s no.7, Ella Toone, earned her 50th international cap on Tuesday night in England’s 2-1 victory against France at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Etienne.
The stakes were high for Sarina Wiegman’s side, who went into the fixture on the back of a home loss against the same opponents at St James’ Park on Friday night.
The Lionesses scored twice in the first half of Tuesday’s game, with goals from Georgia Stanway and Alessia Russo, before Kadidiatou Diani pulled one back for the home side with a penalty in the 72nd minute.

Toone was named in the starting line-up and made her impact in attack before being substituted after 71 minutes for Fran Kirby. She joins her United team-mate Mary Earps in reaching her 50th cap for England – the goalkeeper achieved that in the home meeting with France on Friday night.
In a post on her official Instagram page, Ella said: “What an honour. 50 caps for my country.
“Thank you for those who’ve been on the journey with me! I couldn’t have done it without you.”
Toone, who received her first call-up back in September 2020, has cemented herself as a regular for the Lionesses, helped by her success under Marc Skinner’s management at United.
Having become the first player to score 50 goals for United Women, as well as helping the Reds to win the FA Cup, this has been a notable season for Ella, for both club and now country too.
Millie Turner and Maya Le Tissier enjoyed meeting United team-mate Melvine Malard in her native France.
Unfortunately, Earps missed Ella’s landmark game in France, having been substituted during the first fixture in the North East with a hip injury, but has confirmed that she is only expected to be out for a few weeks.
Meanwhile, three other Reds – Maya Le Tissier, Millie Turner and Grace Clinton – were all unused substitutes for England.
