Glen Johnson says Moises Caicedo is not worth £100million, with two of his former clubs locked in a bidding war over the Brighton midfielder.
Liverpool have hijacked Chelsea’s long pursuit of the 21-year-old, with the Reds reported to have submitted a higher bid closer to the Seagulls’ £100m asking price.
But former Reds and Blues star Johnson is surprised by the fee involved for a player who has only spent one year in the Premier League.
“Caicedo is obviously a good player but it’s starting to look a little expensive,” the former England defender told Compare.bet.
“It’s typical, Brighton know they’re only going to get one opportunity to sell him, so obviously they’re going to try and wait for the best deal possible and maybe hope for another big club to come in with an offer to push the price up.
“I think if Chelsea were getting Caicedo for £75m, I’d say it was a great deal.
“But if you’re spending £100m-plus, then you’re spending £30m more than you should have done.”
Real Madrid have made contact with David De Gea’s representatives, according to reports.
The Spanish giants are considering their options after news of No.1 Thibaut Courtois’ ACL injury, which could rule him out of the entire season.
As well as De Gea – a free agent after leaving Manchester United – Real are also keeping tabs on Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The Chelsea goalkeeper is a top target for Bayern Munich, who are looking to sign him on loan with the option to buy, with Manuel Neuer still struggling after leg surgery.
But Los Blancos could now rival the German giants for the Spaniard’s signature, with Chelsea willing to let Kepa go after signing Robert Sanchez from Brighton.
A move for De Gea would be a twist of fate for the Spaniard, who was close to signing for Real in 2015 before the deal collapsed due to paperwork not being submitted in time.
Bild are reporting that Harry Kane accepting Bayern Munich’s offer is ‘a mere formality’.
The German outlet write that the striker has built a good relationship with Ange Postecoglou and chairman Daniel Levy is keen to keep the England star.
But, it is claimed personal terms over the move to Germany have been agreed with Kane for weeks, and it was even his insistence that he wanted a deal done before the start of the Premier League that pushed Bayern over the line to offer a higher fee.
However, Sky Germany are reporting that the deal is 50/50, with Kane now hesitant despite both a verbal agreement with Bayern and the clubs agreeing a deal in principle.

Tottenham have refused to rule out the prospect of Harry Kane staying despite accepting a bid of €100m plus add-ons from Bayern Munich.
Kane is weighing up the offer of a five-year deal from the German champions but is believed to be undecided due to the deal being agreed so close to the start of the season.
Kane does not want to be seen to be leaving new manager Ange Postecoglu in the lurch after the pair built up a good relationship in pre-season.
Bayern are hoping to persuade Kane to become their record signing.
It’s looking ‘increasingly likely’ that Harry Kane will stay at Tottenham this season, according to reports.
News broke this morning that Bayern Munich had finally agreed a deal worth almost £100million for the England striker.
But while a deal has been struck between the clubs, the final decision is still Kane’s to make as he is now left with a big call for the future of his career.
And, according to Sky Sports, the indications so far point to Kane staying put at White Hart Lane.
If that happens, he could leave the Spurs as a free agent next summer, when he would shortly have his pick of elite clubs to choose from.
Unless he decides to go all-in and pen a new contract at Tottenham, that is.
Brad Friedel has told talkSPORT having two No.1 goalkeepers at a club ‘doesn’t work’ amid reports of David Raya’s move to Arsenal.
Friedel had the same situation at Tottenham when they signed Hugo Lloris, with the Frenchman eventually taking the American’s spot between the sticks.
Friedel explained that he was 42 by that point, though, which will not be the case at Arsenal with two top class keepers in their prime competing for the same spot.
And the experienced pro says it’s only a matter of time before one of the two players gets frustrated and wants to leave.
“Two number ones, can they exist at a club? No, they can’t,” Friedel told Hawksbee and Jacobs.
“One wants to play. The guy who doesn’t play, Matt Turner, who was just there, sat on the bench for a whole year, should never really have signed for Arsenal in the first place, in my opinion, because he’s good enough to play somewhere. But he sat a whole season. You soon get frustrated.
“The only time it works is if your other goalkeeper is young and he’s learning and he’s coming up, or, in my case, I was really old and I was on the way down.
“But I knew, I was 42 years old when I was dropped, I’d played my whole career, so then it can work.
“Let’s say Raya comes in at Arsenal, he gets his chance, he plays well, and then he gets taken out, he’s upset.
“Let’s say he goes in and he plays well and then he keeps his position, Ramsdale’s upset. It’s too difficult of a position to keep team spirit and cohesiveness and camaraderie.
“I don’t know what’s being said to them, but what I know is that Raya is a Premier League goalkeeper who is good enough to be a No.1 at a host of clubs. And any goalkeeper I’ve ever met who has the ability to be a No.1, when they are number two for one month, okay, two months, okay, but when he gets past the third month, you’re frustrated, you want to play.
“Then you start contacting your agent, looking for moves elsewhere and loan move.
“Then if you’re Mikel Arteta, and let’s say Raya is the No.2 and he comes in and when he’s signing his paperwork, ‘Yep, I’m going to be a team player’, but then the sixth, seventh month, he starts getting frustrated and he all of a sudden is not a team player – well, then you have an issue.”
England star Lauren James has been banned for two games by FIFA following her red card at the Women’s World Cup.
James was sent off for stamping on an opponent during the Lionesses dramatic shootout victory to reach the quarter-finals.
It means that the Chelsea star’s tournament is not over just yet as she would be eligible for the final should England get there.
Brad Friedel has told talkSPORT he wouldn’t be surprised if Harry Kane chose to reject a move to Bayern Munich and stayed at Tottenham.
Speaking on Hawksbee and Jacobs about today’s news, the former Spurs goalkeeper said: “I said this the other night, I was doing the transfer show, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he stayed at Tottenham. I actually thought it was leaning towards he would stay at Tottenham for the year and see it out.
“But it wouldn’t surprise me if he went, as well.
“This is a uncharted territory for Daniel Levy to allow a player, especially the best player possibly in the history of the club, to have a year left on his contract and at the age that he’s at it. It’s not normal that this happens to Daniel because he is one of the very best in the business at making sure that all the contracts are are up to date, up to speed, and he protects the assets at all time.
“It still wouldn’t surprise me if Harry stayed. It wouldn’t surprise me if he turned it down.
“He’s he’s such a good pro, a good guy, great in the changing room, work ethic off the charts. You don’t get great at anything if you turn up late for training and leave first thing. He’s a consummate professional. Leads the line for England. Can’t say enough good things about him.
“Could Tottenham actually let him leave without getting a fee? You know, then you have to take the business side into it. Or did Daniel Levy and the board finally accept the fee and say, ‘Well, now it’s your choice, it’s out of our hands’, and maybe there isn’t as much of a backlash at the board from fans if it happens.
“Harry leaving the options open, that I can understand, and I don’t think the last six months of last season helped. That was turbulent.
“I was at Tottenham four years, four different managers, but I have to tell you, inside the the training ground it was never turbulent. But I came over at the end of last season, I was at Anfield for the game up there, and I had never known a time at Tottenham where, you know, you have your sporting director banned from football, Conte had just gone, Ryan Mason, who’s also a really good Tottenham guy and a really good football brain, he’s taking the team and he’s young.
“It was a really surreal feeling for me to to see that, and I think that may have had a little part to play in this.
“And I don’t think for a second that Harry Kane met with Ange Postecoglou, saw training and now all of a sudden wants to leave. I don’t think that for a second. Actually, I think probably the reverse. I think after meeting him and seeing he’s probably thinking, ‘Oh, wow, this might work’.”

Breaking news just in from Spain – Real Madrid have confirmed Thibaut Courtois has suffered an ACL injury.
The Los Blancos No.1 is now set to miss a large chunk of the season after being sidelined with a series injury to his left knee.
The 31-year-old is set to have surgery on the coming days.
The rumour mill will soon be spinning over who could replace the Belgian.
The 24-year-old Ukrainian Andriy Lunin is their only other senior goalkeeper, and so it’s likely Carlo Ancelotti will dip into the market for a first-class replacement for Courtois.
David de Gea is currently a free agent, so would be a straightforward deal to do, but his ties to rivals Atletico Madrid may stop that move from happening – although that didn’t seem to be an issue a few years ago when he was close to a move to the Bernabeu.
Then there’s David Raya – the Spain No.1 is close to joining Arsenal on loan with a view to buy from Brentford.
But could Real Madrid now hijack that move?
Romelu Lukaku is being talked about as a possible option for Tottenham to replace Harry Kane.
That is, being talked about in the Italian press, and even then the links a tenuous at best.
The report from Gazette dello Sport claims Spurs had previously made contact with Lukaku’s lawyers when Antonio Conte and fellow Italian Fabio Paratici where in charge at the north London club.
But now, it appears the chances of the Belgian ended up at White Hart Lane to succeed Kane are very slim.
Lukaku is very much available, with his move to Juventus now in doubt due to Chelsea’s reservations over Dusin Vlahovic, the striker who was set to join the Blues in a swap deal with the Belgian frontman.
Lukaku has recently returned to the training pitch at the Blues’ Cobham base, but it is widely claimed he wants to move away from the Premier League, making a Spurs switch even more unlikely.
And then there’s the fans.
Juventus supporters have brandished banners and even stormed the pitch in protest of a move for Lukaku – you can only imagine the scenes if a move to Tottenham was on the cards…
Kylian Mbappe has told Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi that he will NOT leave the club this summer, according to reports in France.
PSG are desperate to cash-in on the France superstar this summer rather than lose him for nothing at the end of the season when his contract expires.
Mbappe wants to join Real Madrid – that’s no secret – and is determined to join them as a free agent.
He had had previously told the club his intention to see out the remaining year of his PSG deal, but the club aren’t happy and have made the player train with their reserves, while have removed all merchandise bearing his name from their club shop.
Mbappe is sticking to his guns, though, with Le Parisien reporting he has spoken with their president to reiterate his decision – he will not leave PSG this summer.
So it appears PSG bosses have a decision to make…
Bayern Munich have now joined the race for Moises Caicedo, according to reports.
Liverpool are said to be in talks with Brighton over a possible move for the midfielder, who Chelsea have been chasing for most of the summer so far.
But now they have a big rival in their pursuit, with German champions Bayern now also linked with an interest.
That’s according to Sky Sports, who claim Bayern are exploring a deal for the 21-year-old and a decision could be made over his future by as soon as this weekend.
Bournemouth are set to sign Bristol City midfielder Alex Scott in a deal worth £25million, talkSPORT understands.
Scott will miss the opening weeks of the season with a knee injury, having sat out of the Robins’ 1-1 draw with Preston to kick off the Championship season last weekend.
But Bournemouth see him as a long-term investment and are pressing ahead by agreeing a deal for the 19-year-old attacking midfielder.
Scott is expected to pen a five-year contract with the Cherries for an initial transfer fee of £20m, plus £5m in add-ons.
Edson Alvarez is West Ham’s first signing of the summer window, with the club looking to make some waves late on in the window with a number of deals set to follow.
The Mexican will wear the No.19 shirt and David Moyes is looking forward to working with the talented ball-carrying midfield star.
“We’re really pleased to add Edson to our squad,” said the Hammers boss.
“The midfield area was one we were especially keen to strengthen this summer – and Edson will complement the other options we have in that department.
“He’s an experienced international player, who has enjoyed great success for both club and country during his career to date.
“We’re excited about welcoming to West Ham and seeing him play his part in English and European competition for the club.”
Alvarez appears to be a direct replacement for Declan Rice, following his £105million move to Arsenal, while West Ham are also in advanced talks over the signings of Harry Maguire and James Ward-Prowse.
West Ham have announced the signing of Mexico international Edson Alvarez.
The 25-year-old has penned a contract with the Premier League club that runs until June 2028, following his arrival from Dutch giants Ajax.
The Hammers say they ‘fought off strong competition from other top European clubs’ to bring the midfielder to London Stadium for a reported £34million.
Alvarez won two Eredivisie titles with Ajax and recently lifted his second CONCACAF Gold Cup with Mexico, but now says he’s excited to move to the English top flight with West Ham.
“I am very happy and very proud to be here,” said Alvarez.
“Being here in London and seeing London Stadium, it’s amazing. I can’t wait to play here in front of the West Ham fans.
“It’s a hugely sentimental moment for me in my career. To join a club like a West Ham is a dream for me and my family.
“The Premier League is a special league, the best league in the world and I think my style will suit it. I now have a responsibility to West Ham and the West Ham family and I will give absolutely everything for the shirt.”

It is now being reported that Liverpool have NOT submitted a bid for Moises Caicedo.
James Pearce, formerly of the Liverpool Echo and now Liverpool correspondent for The Athletic, is claiming there is no such bid from the Reds that has eclipsed Chelsea’s rejected £90million offer for the Brighton star.
However, he says Liverpool have made contact with Brighton over a deal, an offer is just yet to be made.
But, like Matt Law from the Telegraph, The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg is also insisting Liverpool HAVE made a bid for the 21-year-old midfielder, and goes as far to say that Chelsea’s pursuit of Caicedo is now in doubt.
Alex Crook added on White and Jordan: “How much of this is genuine Liverpool interest in Moises Caicedo, and how much of this is tit-for-tat after Chelsea came in for Romeo Lavia, who we know Liverpool are desperate to sign? We don’t know.”

Aston Villa are pushing to sign Nicolo Zaniolo after confirming a major injury blow to Emi Buendia.
The Villans have announced the midfielder is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an ACL injury he suffered in training.
Manager Unai Emery has moved quickly in the transfer market with Italy international Zaniolo lined up as a replacement.
Villa’s new director of football, Monchi, was the man who signed Zaniolo from Inter Milan when he worked at Roma.
And he is now leading the discussions for Villa as they look to sign Zaniolo from Galatasaray – having only joined the Turkish club from Roma in February.
Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign United States captain Tyler Adams from Leeds United, talkSPORT understands.
The versatile 24-year-old midfielder will seal a move to Stamford Bridge after the Blues triggered a relegation clause in his contract.
Leeds were relegated from the Premier League last season, and it meant Adams could be snapped up for £20million this summer.
The USA international was left out of the Leeds squad for their Championship opener against Cardiff [a 2-2 draw] and he is now set to undergo a medical with Chelsea ahead of a move back to the top flight.
It’s all kicking off now… away from the Harry Kane news, it is now claimed Liverpool have outbid Chelsea for Moises Caicedo.
That’s according to the Daily Telegraph’s Matt Law, who has broken the news.
That, he says, would explain why Chelsea made a late bid to try and gazump the Reds’ move for Romeo Lavia.
talkSPORT understands Chelsea have had a £48million bid for Lavia rejected, but the Blues remain in discussions with Southampton, who expect the London club to meet their £50m asking price.
And it’s come after Liverpool hijacked their long pursuit of Caicedo, after several rejected bids from Chelsea.
The Blues’ latest offer is thought to have stood at £90m in total. That was turned down as Brighton are demanding at least £100m for the 21-year-old Ecuadorian.
It now appears Liverpool have bid more and are now leading the race, although it is claimed Caicedo’s preference would still be a move to Stamford Bridge.
Danny Murphy has no worries about Tottenham this season if Harry Kane leaves.
He believes the striker’s exit will actually buy new manager Ange Postecoglou more time and take the pressure off his job, and says the Australian could even find a ‘diamond in the rough’ to help replace the No.10.
“I think Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou will have a plan,” Murphy told talkSPORT.
“I think he would have had an honest conversation with Kane or his representatives and Daniel Levy about the possibility that, if Bayern do reach a certain level, what are they going to do?
“I’d be amazed if they hadn’t done that, because that would be really bad planning.
“I think in some ways it takes the pressure off him [the manager] because if they don’t hit the ground running and they don’t have a great start, people will just elude to the fact, well, they’ve lost the best striker. They’ve lost Kane.
“Tottenham will have to give him some time to work his magic on this new squad and bring somebody in. I think it kind of takes the pressure off him and gives him even more of a free hit than he had previously.
“So I don’t worry for Tottenham and the manager moving forward. He was going to have to make a plan next summer without Harry probably anyway, it’s just brought forward that decision.
“Do you bring someone in, do you give Richarlison a run at it? Do you place Son central or do you go out and find someone?
“And Postecoglou, to be fair to him, he knows the world market doesn’t he, he’s good at finding gems, finding diamonds in the rough.”
Danny Murphy joined White and Jordan to react to the Harry Kane news.
And while some Tottenham fans will still harbour some hope of the striker rejecting the move to stay at Spurs, former midfielder Murphy is certain the transfer will happen.
“It’s been on the cards for a while hasn’t it,” he said.
“I think it’s a great move for him if I’m honest and I can’t see it not happening.
“I think the amount of effort Bayern have gone to get the deal over the line, there would be no way they would be doing that if they hadn’t had to go ahead from Kane that he’s keen to do it, and the finances would have already been discussed.
“I’m more than certain about that, that’s the way football is.
“It’s going to be a wonderful opportunity for him. He’s gonna have a five-year contract, that’s five opportunities of winning the Champions League.
“With the opportunities he’s got on the on the table, this is the best club and the best move for him.
“He’s not gonna win the Champions League at Spurs, he’s not gonna win the Premier League at Spurs, the only thing he’s giving up is the is the Premier League goalscoring record, but in terms of his career when he looks back in ten years, he could well be looking at not just Bundesliga titles, which seem pretty nailed on, but you’re looking at maybe one or two Champions League titles along the way.
“And the only other two teams really you could say at the moment who are we would be competitive with them for the Champions League is Man City and Real Madrid.”
It is understood Harry Kane has been offered a five-year contract by Bayern Munich.
The fee is £86.4milion [€100m] up front, with add-ons pushing the deal closer to the £100m mark.
The onus is now on Kane.
It has been suggested for weeks that the striker has agreed personal terms with the club already and wants the move to happen.
It was even claimed his wife, Katie, was spotted in Bavaria looking for houses and schools for their children.
But could Kane shock us all and decide to stay put at his boyhood club after all?

The ball is now firmly in Kane’s court, with the clubs finally coming to an agreement over a deal for the striker.
