Former world champions Judd Trump and John Higgins booked their respective places in the last 16 of the English Open on Wednesday. Trump was pushed all the way before edging out Jimmy Robertson 4-3, but Higgins enjoyed a much more routine victory in a 4-0 whitewash of Mark Davis at the Brentwood Centre in Essex. Trump fights back to beat Robertson in tight clash at English Open

2020 English Open champion Judd Trump claimed the final two frames to complete a 4-3 win over Jimmy Robertson in the last 32 of the English Open in Brentwood.

Former European Masters holder Robertson led 3-2 with breaks of 53, 73 and 128, but Trump – who earlier produced knocks of 63 and 67 – finished with runs of 54 and 58 to secure a meeting with Yuan Sijun on Thursday.

“It was a brilliant crowd tonight, people here love snooker and I thrive on that,” Trump told reporters. “The area around London could have three or four events.”

Yuan ran out a 4-1 winner against Welsh Open champion Robert Milkins, boosted by 61 and 75 with Milkins compiling 81 in the second frame to win his only frame of the match.

John Higgins is also through after restricting Mark Davis to only seven points in a 4-0 whitewash that saw him open with 91 and finish with 54.

2021 finalist Higgins will take on Oliver Lines for a quarter-final spot on Thursday night.

But UK champion Mark Allen is out after losing 4-2 to Matthew Selt in the last 32.

Allen rolled in 103 in the second frame on his way to leading 2-0, but Selt won the next four with breaks of 79, 114 and 72 helping him progress.

Elsewhere, world No. 58 Elliot Slessor enjoyed a 4-3 upset win against world No. 13 Jack Lisowski by winning a taut decider having earlier rolled in 90 and 99.

While Ricky Walden produced a great escape victory against 2006 world champion Grame Dott, who led 3-0 after opening with a fine 84.

Walden trailed 70-0 and needed a snooker on the pink in the fourth frame, but got it before reeling off the final three frames, including 134 in the sixth frame, to advance to a last-16 match with Selt after winning the decider on the final pink.

“That’s never happened to me before and players will go through a whole career without making a come back like that,” said Walden. “I didn’t play great, but I hung in there and asked the questions. In the end I potted a great pink to win because it was a pressure shot.

“Graeme will be disappointed, he had chances to finish me off. It’s a horrible drive home when you lose a match like that.. I have had plenty of those myself, I’ve had some shockers.”
