‘Makes the game look ridiculously easy’ – Trump makes superb 142 break against Wilson
Judd Trump cruised into the second round of the Scottish Open with an impressive 47-minute victory against Sydney Wilson in his Edinburgh opener.
The world No. 2 struck his 53rd century of the season as he breezed past the 33-year-old without reply, with Wilson – who is not on the tour – looking out of his comfort zone as he struggled to compete with Trump’s excellence.
After some poor positional play from Wilson early on, Trump capitalised and made a break of 79 to get the ball rolling and secure the opening frame.
He continued his fine start to the match in the second frame and looked on course for a maximum 147 break.
However, Trump opted for the pink midway through his knock, concluding with a 142 to move halfway to victory.
The third frame saw more beautiful snooker from Trump as Wilson couldn’t shake the nerves, missing a third easy pot as the match started to get away from him.
Trump says table demotion ‘inspired’ him to improve – ‘I wanted to be back in the mix’
Trump knocked in a sensational brown on his way to wrapping up the third frame within 33 minutes and moving to within one of the second round.
More sloppiness from the underdog followed with another miss to right-middle as the pair played out what almost felt like a dead rubber of a fourth frame.
Trump sunk a red in the same pocket before breaking the pack, but handed control back to Wilson when the 2019 world champion opted for an awkward pot to the middle as he hunted a century.
But Wilson couldn’t take advantage as he missed a routine black off its spot and Trump cleared up from there.
There was a shock in the following match when Mark Allen crashed out following a 4-2 defeat to Jamie Jones.
Shoot-out winner Allen eased his way to the first frame thanks to a break of 61, but struggled to find his free-flowing best from then on.
Jones, who hasn’t got past the second round of a tournament this season, then levelled the tie when edging the second by 72 points to 59, despite failing to register a break of 50+.
He soon rectified that though, taking a 2-1 lead thanks to a magnificent total clearance of 141 in the third frame.
The fourth was somewhat more bitty, with Allen requiring numerous visits to the table to eventually seal it, honourably ending one of his breaks by calling a foul against himself for brushing a red with his hand.
‘A miracle to get here’ – Brecel on late dash to Scottish Open
Jones rediscovered the form he found in the third frame to knock in the century and edged ahead to move within a frame of victory.
Another century from Jones – this time a clearance of 103 – was enough to see him through as he booked his spot in the second round.
The Welshman will take on Dominic Dale for a spot in the third round.
