After two days, it’s fair to say Pinehurst No. 2 is providing the world’s best golfers with a unique challenge.
A round of 72 would have doomed anyone’s chances at the PGA Championship in May, but Rory McIlroy was able to shoot a 72 and still remain firmly in contention at the U.S. Open. That’s how tough the course is playing, and there’s no reason to believe it will get any easier as we head into the weekend.
Scottie Scheffler just barely made the weekend cut, finishing 5-over par between the first two rounds. The leaderboard still has a few big names between McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele.
Will a familiar face move up the leaderboard on Saturday, or will a potential first-time major winner — perhaps Ludvig Aberg, Patrick Cantlay or Thomas Detry — take another step toward history?

12:05 p.m. — It’s been a rough day for Cameron Young, who narrowly made the cut but is 6-over through nine holes today. He double-bogeyed No.’s 1 and 7.
11:25 a.m. — Scottie Scheffler is 1-over on the day, bringing him to 6-over for the week. He narrowly made the cut last night to keep his slim hopes alive.
11:20 a.m. — The leaders won’t be teeing off until after 3 p.m. ET today, but the top of the leaderboard is so tight that it’s very much worth watching anyone at even par or better as the morning turns to afternoon.
11:15 a.m. — The course is playing especially tough today, with only three players under par. The biggest riser? David Puig, who birdied two of his first three holes to move to 2-over.
