The golf world headed to the City of Angels — Los Angeles — for the 2023 U.S. Open.
And the tournament got its Hollywood ending.

Wyndham Clark is the U.S. Open champion and in unlikely fashion. The talk for the last few days centered on the Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy — even into Round 4 as Clark was rolling. At times it felt inevitable that one of those, alongside Scottie Scheffler, would emerge victorious.

But fairytales love their underdog stories and Clark certainly qualifies. Just over a month ago, he was winning his first PGA event in early May at the Wells Fargo Championship. Now, he claims his first major.
Clark was once someone on the verge of walking away from the sport. Struggling with the loss of his mother and poor play, there was a chance that he wouldn’t get to this point. Previously on the outside looking in at the top 200 golfers in the world, Clark has come roaring back. Now it’s no longer a question who Wyndham Clark is.
And the most popular Wyndham isn’t a hotel chain.

It’s Clark who staved off challenges all day long, while the other big names struggled — somehow remaining an underdog even with the lead. Clark played like he’s been there before and now he has.
For all that talk of low scores — which dominated headlines — an even par performance in Round 4 got the job done. At 10 under for the weekend, Clark announced his arrival to the rest of the golf world. This victory gives everyone in the sport a story to rally behind after a few weeks of uncertainty.

9:51 p.m.: CLARK HAS DONE IT! Wyndham Clark is your U.S. Open champion! A first major championship comes just a month after his first victory.

9:50 p.m.: A bogey for Fowler as he closes out a disappointing finish to his Sunday.
9:50 p.m.: Answer: Absolutely not. The shot is picture perfect. A quick tap in and then Clark goes down in the history books.
9:47 p.m.: The crowd has surrounded the green here after a rush toward the hole. Can Clark maintain his composure with all of these people now closer than usual?

9:44 p.m.: If you were to believe broadcast cameras, you would’ve thought that Wyndham Clark put his tee shot in the Pacific Ocean. Luckily for him, that wasn’t reality and now he has two shots to win the U.S. Open.
9:43 p.m.: It’ll be a sleepless night for Rickie Fowler tonight, who held the lead for three of the four rounds, but not the one that counts. Another bad shot, this time on 18, is just another one that he’ll be replaying for some time.
9:41 p.m.: Clark has three shots left to avoid a playoff, or worse, an outright loss. No pressure, right? Let’s see if he can remain calm like he has all day.
9:39 p.m.: McIlroy comes up with yet another par and will need at least a bogey from Clark to have a chance to win. His partner on the day — Scheffler — also settles for par, who ends his tournament at 7 under.
— U.S. Open (USGA) (@usopengolf) June 19, 2023
9:36 p.m.: Clark begins his trek to the 18th tee and holds a one-shot lead while McIlroy hopes for a miracle up ahead on the green.
9:35 p.m.: And swing he does, but comes up short. It’ll be a long chance for McIlroy, but he needs to two-putt, otherwise it might be over barring disaster from Clark.
9:34 p.m.: McIlroy is 181 yards away from the hole and needs to land a good one for a birdie chance. He’ll put together a big swing.
9:32 p.m.: Remember Rickie Fowler? It’s been a day to forget, but he just placed a beautiful shot on 17 to get on the green. His shot is what Wyndham Clark had hoped for, but the leader can’t replicate it. He pulls the shot and ends up in a tough spot.
9:29 p.m.: McIlroy gets the shot he needs as he needs a birdie here to feel better about his chances.
9:28 p.m.: Scheffler gets the honor of teeing off first at 18. He sits at 7 under, but will be left wondering how his tournament would’ve turned out if the putter didn’t let him down.
9:25 p.m.: Welcome to the fairway, Wyndham Clark. After a few holes of uneven play, the leader plays a good shot off the tee with McIlroy getting ready for the final hole of the day. Maybe.
9:24 p.m.: McIlroy can’t sink the long birdie and settles for — you guessed it — another par. He heads to 18 one shot behind Clark.
9:22 p.m.: It’s magic, you know? Clark can’t get the ball to fall and it’s a bogey at 16. Nervy moments upcoming at LACC.
The lead is one. #USOpenpic.twitter.com/npbT9K47gU
— U.S. Open (USGA) (@usopengolf) June 19, 2023
9:19 p.m.: McIlroy might have that magic with Clark wavering in the last few holes. He gets onto the green with a great shot at 17.
9:15 p.m.: Clark’s trip to the bunker isn’t a fun one, with a terrible spot keeping him from trying for the green.
9:10 p.m.: Big time putt from McIlroy keeps him in contention at 9 under.
9:09 p.m.: Scheffler knocks down a birdie to get to 7 under. Is it too late for him? Probably, but a meltdown from the leaders can’t be ruled out as Clark buys a trip to the bunker on 16.
9:08 p.m.: McIlroy can’t take advantage at 15 by making a birdie. He’ll have a lot of work to save par, which is a must-have at this stage.
9:06 p.m.: Clark’s putt goes wide and now he’ll drop back to 11 under, setting it up for McIlroy to potentially get back into this.
9:04 p.m.: Clark is lining up a crucial par putt to remain at 12 under.
8:55 p.m.: A quick two-putt for Clark gets him to 12 under as the gap at the top of the leaderboard grows. McIlroy can only par the 15th, keeping him three shots back with three to go.
Three. Shot. Lead. @Wyndham_Clark widens his lead after a stellar second shot into No. 14 leads to birdie #USOpenpic.twitter.com/eoEPd6yzsh
— U.S. Open (USGA) (@usopengolf) June 19, 2023
8:50 p.m.: Huge shot for Clark! He avoids the exact problem that McIlroy just faced and gets onto the green, setting up a possible try for eagle.
8:48 p.m.: Scottie Scheffler might want to break his putter today — and no one would blame him for it either. It’s been a tough day on the greens and it just got worse. A missed birdie chance keeps him from getting to 7 under.
8:47 p.m.: McIlroy nearly limited the damage, but settles for bogey. It’s a two-shot lead for Clark now after McIlroy’s par streak ends.
8:45 p.m.: It’s worth noting that the McIlroy’s drop was up the bunker, rather than down into the sand. He’ll have a chance to save par after this mess.
8:42 p.m.: McIlroy gets a crazy break since his ball was ruled to be embedded in the bunker. He gets relief and a drop, one club length from where it was.
8:40 p.m.: Unlucky shot for McIlroy and it will take some searching to find his ball in the bunker.
8:39 p.m.: Beach season is upon us and Scottie Scheffler just introduced himself to the sand at the 14th hole.
8:35 p.m.: Another par for Clark gets him through 13 holes with the lead as he remains in the driver’s seat.
8:25 p.m.: Scottie Scheffler from way downtown! A long birdie at 13 gets him back to 6 under, but it might be too little, too late for someone who has struggled with the putter today.
8:21 p.m.: Rory McIlroy came out blazing hot on Thursday and remained in contention ever since. But so far the story today is that he can’t quite get over the hump. He’s hanging around and only one shot back, but 11 straight pars leave plenty to be desired.
8:18 p.m.: Barring a miracle, this tournament will come down to just two golfers down the stretch. Another bogey for Fowler puts him at 6 under and five back of Clark with five to go.
8:09 p.m.: Scottie Scheffler is having short-stick struggles as well. He misses another short par putt and will drop out to 5-under for the tournament.
8:07 p.m.: Rory McIlroy continues to play well from tee-to-green and his putter is solid. However, he hasn’t been able to make anything of a significant length. That rings true on 11, as he curves the ball around the hole and will settle for a short par putt.
8:02 p.m.: So much for the save. Fowler’s put is just a little far left and lips out. He falls to 7-under and will be four shots off the lead after Clark drained his par putt.
8:01 p.m.: That said, Fowler’s shot was, perhaps, outdone by Wyndham Clark’s. He nearly holed it from beyond the green and ran in just a few feet past the hole. He should have a chance to save par and maintain his lead.
8 p.m: Fowler’s bunker shot is a beauty, as he brings it to within a few feet of the hole. He should have a good shot to save par and stay within striking distance of his top competition.
7:55 p.m.: Rickie Fowler’s tee shot on the Par 3 11th hole comes up short of the green and lands in a bunker. Scheffler just made bogey from a similar spot, so Fowler may be in trouble. Clark may be in some as well, as he landed his shot beyond the green.
7:53 p.m.: Scheffler’s putting appears to have done him in. He misses a mid-length par putt on 11 and drops another stroke. With seven holes left to play, he is down five strokes. He will need a hot stretch and some help to claw his way back into this one.
7:50 p.m.: McIlroy’s 18-foot birdie putt on the 11th is a good one, but it didn’t quite have the speed to get there. He taps in for par and continues to trail Clark by one stroke.
7:47 p.m.: Wyndham Clark’s birdie putt on 10 skittered just past the hole. He taps it in for a par to maintain his lead. McIlroy could tie him on the 11th with a good putt.
7:45 p.m.: Rory McIlroy hits the green on the 11th after a nice draw to land on the putting surface. He will have a shot at a birdie, albeit from long distance.
7:42 p.m.: Clark and Fowler both took aim at the green on the 10th hole with their second shots. Fowler came up just short of the green while Clark landed safely on it. He will have a chance to go for birdie as he begins the back-nine.
7:35 p.m.: And Clark manages to save par on the ninth. That will send him to the back-nine at 11-under par — and still in sole possession of first place after Rory McIlroy missed a potential tournament-tying putt on the 10th.
7:33 p.m.: Scottie Scheffler is lurking four shots off the lead in fourth right now, but his putter continues to fail him. He misses a birdie opportunity on the 10th hole and will have some work coming back for par.
7:32 p.m.: Clark was wayward off the eighth tee, landing in the rough just above the greenside bunker. He had an awkward stance for his second shot but managed to get it on the green and toward the hole. He will have a shot at saving par to keep the outright lead.
7:24 p.m.: Clark with a miraculous save at the 8th. He bogeys, but it could’ve been much worse. Calm, cool and collected would be three words to describe the man named Wyndham right now.
7:23 p.m.: Some ugly shots being shown on the broadcast at the moment as Fowler gets a chance for birdie. What a swing of events that would be in LA.
7:21 p.m.: Big time danger for Clark! His ball gets stuck in some tall grass after an awful bounce. He’ll be lucky to make it out of here with just a bogey.
7:10 p.m.: Is that the shot that gets Scheffler going? He almost knocks in an eagle at the 8th, but settles for a birdie — getting him to 7 under now.
7:08 p.m.: Clark came into Sunday as the dark horse, despite being at the top. So far out of the top four, it’s him that is playing the best while McIlroy, Scheffler and Fowler have all struggled to some degree.
7:03 p.m.: As if the first shot wasn’t bad enough, the second one is even worse. Fowler’s risk backfires and is likely in a spot for another bogey, at best.
6:59 p.m.: Fowler’s horrid start continues with a bad tee shot at seven. It’s hard to imagine that Fowler, his fans and his bettors are feeling comfortable at the moment.
6:57 p.m.: Scheffler can’t save par after his big break and will drop a shot to 6 under through seven.
6:55 p.m.: It seemed like Clark was in a bad spot at six, but a fantastic shot from the thick grass gets him a short attempt at a birdie, which he converts — moving to 12 under.
Meeting the moment.@Wyndham_Clark takes a two-shot lead at LACC. #USOpenpic.twitter.com/ZokdK9eP3l
— U.S. Open (USGA) (@usopengolf) June 18, 2023
6:53 p.m.: Huge break for Scheffler as he gets a break thanks to an obstruction. After a few drops, he ends up placing the ball and doesn’t face a penalty. As a result, he has a chance to save par.
6:48 p.m.: Trouble at the 7th for Scheffler. His tee shot hooks wide left like a bad field goal attempt in the wind and is lost in the trees.
6:40 p.m.: If timeouts were a thing in golf, Fowler would’ve needed to call a few by now. He’s unraveled early. With Clark and McIlroy holding steady, it could get late quickly for the man in orange.
6:30 p.m.: A perfect par start through the first five for Scheffler. It seems as though everyone is waiting for his run to start, but the status quo will have to do for now.
6:25 p.m.: Back to the lead! Clark knocks down a birdie at the 4th to jump back out in front. He’s getting to go through this final round quietly so far with the attention focused on the other big names.
— U.S. Open (USGA) (@usopengolf) June 18, 2023
6:12 p.m.: Fowler finishes the third with another par. He’s been tentative so far with the putter and erratic with everything else. He’ll need to settle in soon.
6:02 p.m.: The second hole claims both participants in the final pair. Clark hands the lead right back and Fowler settles for a bogey to drop a shot.
5:55 p.m.: Fleetwood’s bid for history has fallen short. He ran out of steam at the end and will put a 63 on the scorecard. At one point, it looked like he’d be in position to shoot a 61, which would’ve been a record.
— U.S. Open (USGA) (@usopengolf) June 18, 2023
5:45 p.m.: Harris English was hoping to find his way to the top of the leaderboard today. Instead he’s off to a nightmare start. English was able to save himself after a wayward tee shot on the first hole, but double bogeys the second. He played that hole like someone would on a miniature golf course.
5:44 p.m.: After McIlroy got off to a fast start with a birdie on the opening hole, Fowler found some trouble off the tee, but is able to save par. Clark knocks down a birdie though and grabs hold of the solo lead.

5:34 p.m.: And now Fowler has teed off alongside Wyndham Clark, the final pair of the day to get underway. Buckle up for what should be a fun ride to the finish.
5:28 p.m.: Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy have now joined the program, leaving only two golfers yet to tee off.

4:59 p.m.: Tommy Fleetwood, WOW! What a moment for the Englishman who is now 6 under through 14 holes. The eagle on 14 is his second of the day and rockets him into the top five with a few more holes left to place. According to NBC, he is only the 9th player since 1990 with multiple eagles in a round in the U.S. Open.

4:55 p.m.: It hasn’t been a fun few days for Billy Horschel, but at least he’ll have this highlight to look back on.

4:50 p.m.: All eyes are on Rickie Fowler today and Justin Thomas has a prediction. He’s going with Fowler to finish the job. If that were to happen, Fowler will have held the lead after every round of the U.S. Open.
Front 9 full of fireworks. I think Xander makes a run, Rory gets off to a hot start, becomes a 2 man battle between Rory and Rick. Whoever plays 13-16 the best is in the driver seat. My guess is Rick gets it done at -11. Excited to watch!
— Justin Thomas (@JustinThomas34) June 18, 2023
4:10 p.m.: Another arrival for someone that’s in striking position to win the U.S. Open. And who else would it be? Scottie Scheffler is all business and his history in the tournament is a big reason for that. Can the world’s top golfer get the job done on the big stage today?
— U.S. Open (USGA) (@usopengolf) June 18, 2023
3:56 p.m.: Fleetwood continues his hot start and is rocketing up the leaderboard through the front nine, moving into the top ten thanks to a birdie at the 9th.
— U.S. Open (USGA) (@usopengolf) June 18, 2023
3:43 p.m.: While some of the players down the leaderboard are off and running, we have an official Rickie Fowler sighting. The leader is strutting in and getting ready to rock some orange attire for his Sunday fun in LA.

3:03 p.m.: Austin Eckroat continues his impressive start to Sunday with a fourth birdie, this one on the sixth hole. He opened the day at 2 over, but has now moved up to 2 under and into a tie for 12th.
1:33 p.m.: Much ado is being made about the weather: It’s cloudy, and the marine layer seems to be softening up the course through the early players. It should clear up and stiffen up the course later in the day.
12:49 p.m.: Sixth hole may be one to watch in Round 4, with the hole location for Round 4 in a pretty dangerous spot close to a bunker and a nice, thick rough.
12:15 p.m.: Just past noon on the east coast, and Adam Hadwin and Abraham Ancer are set to tee off at 12:18 p.m., one of the day’s featured groups. Co-leaders Rickie Fowler and Wyndham Clark are set for a 5:30 p.m. ET tee time. Both enter Round 4 at -10.
