Alexander Volkanovski has bounced between his home of featherweight and the lightweight division. After going 0-2 at lightweight, the UFC featherweight champion looks to hold onto his throne. “The Great” defends his title against Ilia Topuria at UFC 298 on February 17. The fight and event airs on ESPN+ PPV in the U.S.
Volkaovski is 13-2 in the octagon since joining the UFC in 2016. The Aussie has steamrolled through the competition at featherweight, including Max Holloway three times for the belt. His last featherweight fight was in July 2023 against Yair Rodriguez.
Many believe the 35-year-old is taking a risk fighting so soon after being knocked out by Islam Makhachev in October. Volkanovski is ready to prove the doubters wrong by taking Topuria out himself.
“Prediction is, I teach him a good lesson,” Volkanovski said on his YouTube channel via MMA Junkie. “He’s going to be embarrassed, he’s going to eat some of his words, and it’s going to be maybe be the start of his journey. He’s young. He is confident. I’ll humble him. He’ll bounce back and start after I give him a good ass beating. Round two, I think. I think I crumble him in the first.

“I’m not saying it’s going to be an easy fight, but I think just how confident he is, he hasn’t been able to prove that. I prove that every time I step in this gym – I’m pushing myself to the limit. I don’t know if he does. He doesn’t act like it. So I’m going to push him, and I think I crumble him inside one, and I get the finish soon after that.”
Topuria joined the UFC in 2020 and is 6-0 for the promotion. In his last contest in June, “El Matador” beat Josh Emmett via unanimous decision. The Spanish fighter has four wins via knockout and eight via submission and has only gone the distance twice, both times in the octagon.
